First time Hawaii visitor
Myself/wife/6 year old
7-10 days

Wife has been looking at Maui but Im not sure it has enough activities for a six year old for 8 days. Do not think we would do the long road thing, as she gets car sick pretty easily.

Would you do Maui the whole time, or jump to Honolulu/another island for a couple of days?

Any info on your experiences with kids would be great, including areas to stay.

With that dynamic, I’d fly into Oahu and start there and end in Maui

Oahu has the zoo, aquarium, the Hilton lagoon and Ala Moana park which are calm beaches good for little kids. Plus I’m sure the little one would love a day at the Polynesian cultural center.

Unless you plan on staying there the whole time, I wouldn’t do the big island. Not a lot of things for a 6 year old to do.

With that time, you'll want to split your trip between two islands.

I second the suggestion to add Oahu. Our family's favorite is Kauai, but Maui is also wonderful. I'd shy away from the Big Island as it does require more time in a car.

Maui’s road to Hana is very cool. If you go, you should not worry about making the whole trip but should stop on the way to visit the many waterfalls and pools

Kauai is my favorite, specifically I would recommend staying near poipu beach. Book a charter to Napoli Coast and take the Gypsy Guide driving tour of the island.

Some are not that far off the road, some require some hiking, definitely not appropriate for a 6 yo

Honestly with a child, I’d go to Kauai and stay in the Poipu area. They have some secluded beaches for kids and then go to Oahu. More things for the child to do. Maui, with the road to Hana and the sure size of Hawaii, make for long days in the car. Like I said earlier, unless you’re planning on staying at the resort on the big island, l wouldn’t recommend going there. What makes it my favorite is all the different things that it provides. To really enjoy it you have to plan your days accordingly. There is lots of driving but if you plan it right, you can maximize your time. Then if Kilauea is erupting, you just throw a wrench in the plans and go. I’ve been to all 5, including Lanai, and they all are wonderful. If you don’t want to explore much, Oahu and Kauai are your two choices.

Penn we did the road to Hana in 2022 and trust me its beautiful but if car sickness is a factor I would not do it. Maybe plan a few stops at the beginning but turn around after about 3 or 4 hours. There are some good waterfalls and beautiful scenery in those hours at the beginning. My wife was a nervous wreck at some of the single lane Bridge crossing as the roads get narrower and you get deeper into the road. The locals drive like bats out of hell and will almost run you off the road too. It was fun but would not do it again. Just my .02
