I believe there are a few of you lurking here based of prior postings.

I was Just curious how yall came to own the camps, pros/cons, is the land leased from the state/oil company, and other general facts of the marsh camp life.

Seems like many of the camps stay in the family/friend group for generations--as I've only seen one of them come up for sale a few years ago.

Any info is appreciated.

I don't own one there but have been down there a long time. The camps on the left at the mouth of PAL are on Delesciner (I just really butchered the spelling there!) property many of the others down the pass are the same there are a few that are leased from the state on a 99 year lease (my knowledge of this is at least 20 years ago so it could have changed).

As far as a camp down there I much prefer a camp on land. When a storm comes you have less prep and typically less clean up. Camps are easier to lock down (although not really I just had to arrest a squatter in mine two weeks ago...). Also water camps you have to load everything into the truck, then everything into the boat then unload into the camp and then repeat the process every trip. For me that gets old really fast and the work outweighs the convenience of being down there already and on the water.

It all comes down to personal preference anything you build down there weather on land or water you have to be prepared to loose and you have to accept you are going to get broken into at some point. As you are likely aware theft down there right now is as bad as it's ever been, I thought it was bad down there around 2000 but right now it's worse...

All these camps stay in family/friend group for generations as you said. I know the names of one of owners that leases the land to owners down there is George Pivach out of Belle Chase. I know a few ppl with camps all the way down there & I lease from Pivach as well not far from marina. Camp on water is nice but as guy in here said, loading/unloading multiple times isn't a blast & also have to rely on generator/solar power for electricity/water. It can be work. Only one set of camps on water down there with power is on left of Pass A Loutre.

As usual, Hammer is correct. Only clarification is that there are no more camps on state land. All the camps you see off Pass A Loutre are leased from the only private land owner within the Pass A Loutre WMA. The massive camp on the north side of Pass A loutre (cant see it from pass a loutre) passed the row of small camps is a recent owner who bought the land in a private land transaction.

Thanks everyone, i appreciate the info.

Frankly, I agree with the Hammer, we currently stay in Cypress at a buddy's camp. Hard to beat the deal we have there, but the ride down river every morning is getting more and more irritating--plus a "place of my own" is something I've always said i wanted in Venice, but frankly the market/pricing in the marinas is insane.

Family previously had a marsh camp on Grand Bayou in Port Sulpher, which kind of sparked my interest in those down river (especially on the south side of Pass a Loutre).

@LSUengr i believe the Gonslins bought that property but don't quote me on that.

Friend has the first camp on the right as you come into the canal of PAL. They've had to rebuild once after katrina. Not sure about theft, but I'm sure they've had issues in the past.

U would be correct! He brings his entire fleet down there for duck season. I know he owns a section and supposedly he leases a section too. He used to do really good duck hunting down there but last couple of season hasn’t been all that great especially compared to the amount of money he spends down there.

Yeah, we see him a good bit at the tournaments throughout summer. He was saying the other day that their season this year was not so hot, which perfectly sums up Venice as a whole.

From looking at satellite, he's done a massive amount of work.

While having his set up would be nice, pocket book says i can currently have a she-shed with a window unit and a fold out cot lol.

You rest a whole lot easier when a storm approaches if that's all you have to lose.

X2 agree with Hammer. We have a camp on hwy 23 and a local neighbor that keeps an eye on it for us. With that said we can fish down the river or up the river and the west side depending on weather.

Hammer, it’s been a while but we use to go to opening weekend dinner at Raymond’s ( salt grass) & the Mississippi boys.

Not to derail, but I think we'd all love the story on this! We've all pulled up to the camp late on a Friday night with that very slight sense of apprehension as you unlock doors and turn on lights and such. To find someone inside squatting would be quite the surprise.
