Wired magazine - no, there are no 150 year olds getting Social Security

Elon Musk claims to have found rampant fraud in the Social Security Administration. There's a much simpler explanation.
Elon Musk has repeatedly claimed that his so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) project had uncovered massive government fraud when it alleged that 150-year-olds were claiming Social Security benefits. But Musk has provided no evidence to back up his claims, and experts quickly pointed out that this is very likely just a quirk of the decades-old coding language that underpins the government payment systems.
While no evidence was produced to back up this claim, it was picked up by the right-wing commentators online, primarily on Musk’s own X platform, as well as being reported credibly by pro-Trump media outlets.
Computer programmers quickly claimed that the 150 figure was not evidence of fraud, but rather the result of a weird quirk of the Social Security Administration’s benefits system, which was largely written in COBOL, a 60-year-old programming language that undergirds SSA’s databases as well as systems from many other US government agencies.
COBOL is rarely used today, and as such, Musk’s cadre of young engineers may well be unfamiliar with it.
Because COBOL does not have a date type, some implementations rely instead on a system whereby all dates are coded to a reference point. The most commonly used is May 20, 1875, as this was the date of an international standards-setting conference held in Paris, known as the "Convention du Mètre."
That’s just one possible explanation for what DOGE allegedly found. Musk could also have simply looked up the SSA’s own website, which explains that since September 2015 the agency has automatically stopped benefit payments when anyone reaches the age of 115.

Let’s audit it at least.
What’s wrong with that? We have a department for it. Let’s use it.

awesome.
who the frick cares.
fix it.
prove there isn't massive fraud going on and that only eligible people are getting checks.
generate a list of everyone 110 years old and up and line-by-line find them (should be easy since the check has their street address, eh?) and make them answer the door and show you their ID.
Put birthdate into system.
Move to next.

OR… Musk and friends found exactly what they said they found. Did Wired list that as “one possible option”?
I’m amazed that these folks are claiming that Musk is out of his depth because you know “accounting is complicated”.

I'm so glad ultra leftist Wired could chime in. Thanks, buddy.

Regardless if they are recieving benefits or not, any account with an age of 100 or over should flagged and verified valid every year.

So very similar to a Unix Timestamp. Any engineer understands the difference between a timestamp and an actual date. Wired is gay.

So a programming "glitch" is the cause of the waste, fraud and abuse?
Got it... So glad the agency "stopped" benefit payments when recipients reached the age of 115...
You fricks are entertaining in your defense of waste...

We do not know if they are being paid, but they are in the system.
They will be looking to see if any over 112 years old was being paid.

COBOL is perfectly capable of updating the field "Dead" with an X.

This makes zero sense. Social security has birth dates for every single recipient. You’re doing mental gymnastics here to explain away what was found.

Everyone receiving a check should have a real birthdate. Even if accurate, a placeholder age whilst receiving a check is still 100% unacceptable

But DOGE said it was true!!!!!
Lol.
Lol.

GO FIND THEM. we have their street address on the checks and their bank account it was deposited into right?
how hard can this be?

So whats wrong with an audit?
Posted on 2/18/25 at 9:42 am to Eurocat
Ok, wow. Maybe only half of this is fraud.
What about all the other money not related to SS?
