Looking at taking family to Europe for the Holidays and started researching great locations and Christmas Markets keep popping up
Has anyone done Christmas in Prague, Munich, etc? Any advice or recommendations as starting blind

Brussels market was fine (impressive for an American tourist, but I don’t know how it compares to others in the EU.)

Yes. Prague. Strasbourg. Colmar. Basel. Among others.
Just did Budapest, Munich, Salzburg and Vienna this past December FYI.
Guess some specific questions to start with would be how much time, budget, ages of kids, any special interests?
Good Article!

Good (but long) Video!

GF and I did Vienna last December. Visited a ton of Christmas markets there. The museums and architecture all over the city were incredible.

Having said that, I don't know that my 11 year old daughter would've liked it. I guess it depends on the age of your kids and what all they're into.

My wife and I visited Vienna and Prague last December on a Christmas market-focused trip.
TBH, I got a little weary of the markets and the crowds after 2 days in each city.
The foods, Christmas crafts and goods, and mulled wines in the markets in each city were pretty similar to each other, with a few exceptions.
You really need to see the churches, castles, and other landmarks, too, to break up the repetition. Daytime is best time for that site-seeing for the most part. Nights are generally better for experiencing the markets, except they are more crowded.
Musical performances in the Italian Nat'l Church of Mary of the Snows and St. Stephen's in Vienna were a highlight in Vienna. Prague is so compact, we were able to see a lot of it in 2 days and fit in a day trip.
Get cash for some bathrooms and crafts at some of the markets. Otherwise, contactless payment options are offered almost everywhere.
Good luck.

Very helpful - Yes, my kids are adults pre-grandchildren for me so we decided to do something different and explore - this is very helpful! Thank you!

Hey, if they're adults, then I have something unique for you to consider!
Go to Salzburg. Beautiful city. Nice Christmas market.
AND...
You can have a once in a lifetime experience and go see Krampus!!!
Krampusnacht in Salzburg is celebrated on December 5th each year. It's a traditional event where Krampus, a mythical creature from Alpine folklore, accompanies Saint Nicholas to punish naughty children.
We just did this in December. What a hoot!

I totally forgot about that. It's probably the only thing you'll need cash for in most of the EU. Why people think paying a bathroom attendant who doesn't clean anything or do anything, apparently, is normal in malls, etc. there.

Vienna and Budapest were probably the best, but Brno was very small and wonderful. Incredibly underrated.

Strasbourg and Cologne Christmas Markets were my favorite.

Germany in general has elite Christmas Markets.
Cologne
Munich
Rothenberg ob der Tauber (one of the most famous)
Colmar France is also elite

Many places have one or two large Christmas markets. I've been to ones in Prague, Bruges, Paris, Reims. All nice. But Vienna was by far the best because in addition to the larger, more touristy market at the City Hall, there were about 8 smaller neighborhood markets that you run into just wandering the city. The smaller ones had a local feel, with neighbors and nearby office workers enjoying the season.l

My brother just went to most of the cities listed so far, but the best one he claimed was Tallinn. It's probably under the radar for most people and he said it was much cheaper than the other cities.

You could look in to the Viking Christmas river cruises. They go to the major Christmas market towns. The website has descriptions and short videos about the destinations.
Even if you don’t take the cruise, the site provides good information about the towns.
