Serious question
Because I’m ignorant
I know it’s to protect the hand
But does that give the runner an advantage when stealing a base?
A couple of inches longer fingers

first time watching a baseball game?

Helps protect the fingers from getting jammed while diving in

Yes

Also can protect a cleat stepping on a hand too.

I would hold my batting gloves in both hands making a fist. That’s how long ago I played college baseball. That protected my fingers from getting jammed.

Allows you to flip the bird to the ump without him seeing it.

So none of you baseball experts
Have a serious answer

We don’t have to be like this to each other

That's how it was done

I’d like to have fingers two inches longer
And yes something else!
But if I were a speedster base runner
The mitt might slow me down
Maybe a wash?

There was a time when runners actually slid into bases feet-first and didn't need protection for their hands. Once a few runners started sliding head first, it became like everything else in sports where players copycat what others are doing.
There have been debates about which effort is faster to the bag, but it seems the feet-first slide is inherently safer. And think of all the money they could save on oven mittens.

If a pan needs to be taken out of the oven on the field, the base runner can accommodate.
