Looking for a good biblical film to watch tonight. Ive seen films like Ben-Hur and The 10 Commandments but I never saw The Passion because a lot of people said bad things about it. Is it worth watching? Never really got into Mel Gibson films besides Apocalypto but I always wondered how this film holds up to older religious epics

Depends, are you into torture porn?

That's a pretty heavy movie for a Friday evening in mid-February.

It is brutal, but it is the one of the most powerful movies ever made... even if you're not a Christian.

I struggle with religion, and I watched most of that movie with tears in my eyes.

It's an amazing and tough watch.

I remember when it came out in early 2004 but I was just a kid. I’ve read about church groups who took kids to see it in theaters and the film just traumatized all of them.

It is intense. Saw it in the theater and the silence of the audience at the end and while exiting (our Exodus, as it were) was not something I had experienced before. People were wrecked. I dont need to see it again. But glad I did.

Definitely watch it. If you liked apoocalypto you’ll like this movie. Just remember Gibson puts you up close and personal w his movies.

But don’t watch it w your wife/GF on Valentine’s Day.

Thats what a lot of people had issue with, but it still was not as brutal as what Jesus actually went thru.

Mel said he toned down some of the more brutal scenes.

I saw this in a theater full of old ladies. There was a lot of crying but no one walked out or appeared too grossed out. Its not as brutal as everyone is making it out to be. If a bunch of gray haired old ladies can handle it, you can too.

This is for me as well.

I saw it in theaters and it was great. And that’s also the last time I’ve seen it.

A buddy of mine told me it was like watching a rerun.

The people who were railing about how violent the film was were the secular filmgoers. Anyone who’s been raised Catholic and attended Catholic school knows that the Passion story is violent in nature.

Watch it once.

You’ll never really want to watch it again. Definitely a one-and-done type of film.

It needs to be violent to get the point across about Jesus dying for our sins. There is a strong subplot about Jesus and Mary that I think even a non Catholic could appreciate, though this movie is obviously made for a religious audience.
