Wounded Deer Tracking Dogs

Do you track on leash or off leash and why?
I know recovery rate percentage increases dramatically if your dog is off leash but I have serious concerns of moving to off leash.

Everyone I’ve seen that goes off leash had really good GPS integrated collars

Only tracked on leash when I had to. Used to be required to at night.
Gps collars have made it super easy. Let the dog go, wait till he stops, go collect deer.
When I started out I didn't have such things and had to bushwack my way behind the dog. Was ultra fun but it was a little ridiculous.

No concerns about him getting in a road or getting injured?

Bavarian mountain hound here. Strictly track off leash. Woods are to thick where we are. Put a Garmin gps collar and a bell on it. It lets her work the scent better

I trail on a lead but I have a GPS collar. I've trained her so that I can tone her back if I see her going towards a road on the map if I do ever happen to let her off the lead.

I keep Arnie on leash. Haven't lost a deer yet.

Off. You can't run down a leg shot or gut shot on a leash in most cases. Recovery rate is much higher. I'm around 75%. Plus I don't like getting pulled through briars.
Obedience training, particularly recall to the tone or vibrate button on the Garmin, is critical when running off leash.

I track a good bit with friend. He’s off leash with garmin collar. Also put a flashing rechargeable collar on at night. Once he “trees”, he’ll come back and get you to bring you to the deer.

WestM, my buddy has a great Bavarian male. I think you may know him, as I believe you shared bear pics with his son. Anyway, let me know if you want to breed your female. Buddy is from West Monroe, but is usually at our camp in Madison Parish.

Never a leash here. My catahoula doesn’t run off. She comes back pissed I’m not there yet. I still stomp through the bs. I really need to get a tracking collar. Life would be easier and I’m getting old.

If his last name is Petrus I do!
I screwed up and let the vet talk me into neutering her back a couple years ago. She is a beast to.

I’m thinking of getting a Bavarian. It sounds like you have had a good experience ? Would you recommend the breed? Specific breeder?

That’s him and that’s too bad. I couldn’t be more impressed with the two Bavarians I’ve tracked with.

I do the same, on leash and I have a garmin gps collar. I like the idea of watching on the garmin and calling him back if he gets close to a road, but that sounds like it has the potential to get tricky.

Absolutely would, she is as smart of a dog as I’ve ever seen. Agile and nimble and a heck of a nose. She trailed a buck my son shot with a crossbow last year for a little over a mile the day after he shot. She found him belly up in the Tensas river. She will let my 3 boys climb all over her. Pull her ears, it don’t matter. She is loving as can be.
I bought her from Lumpys Kennels out of Wisconsin.

I had a jagdterrier before the Bavarian mountain hound. He wouldn’t hold a candle to the Bavarian when it came to tracking. I’m not knocking them just giving my honest view

Rebel, my Bavarian, she will not track a deer that isn’t mortally wounded. If you put her on one that is a leg shot or whatever she will trail it for a little bit and come back to you. If she does that it’s time to go back to the camp.
A lot of people think a dog actually trails the blood. That is wrong. A deer when shot puts out a scent out of his glands between there hooves. The dog is tracking that scent and they can differentiate between a mortally wounded deer and one that is still alive. At least my dog can
