Angel Fire New Mexico Advice

First time skiers and taking kids 5 & 8 to Angel Fire over Mardi Gras for 4 full days. We are figuring we will do two days of skiing, but looking to see if there are any other things to do in the area during the day. Any open areas for kids to sled (they had a blast on the levees during our snow storm). I see the resort has sledding, but it is in hour increments and doesn't really kill much of the day. Anybody have any experience with the snow mobile tours? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I recommend you drive half an hour north of Angel Fire and head to Red River. There's literally nothing else to do at Angel Fire other than ski. They do have a hill for tubing though. Just got back from there mid January and we went up to Red River Sleds and did the tour. Highly recommend it.

I was in Red River and Angel Fire a few weeks ago. The snow sucks, they are having an abysmal year, 1/3 of each mountain was closed and what was open was not good.
I have nothing to add other than Vine in Red River has great breakfast and donuts.

I'm guessing you're maybe used to spending some time at larger cities when on ski vacations?
We go to RR a lot, own condos there...but I can tell you it is a very small mountain town.
Other than doing a snowmobile tour (when the snow sucks in RR - your better bet might be Bobcat Pass - link below), all you will really be able to do is shopping and eating. There is the RR Ski Area, so if you want to hit their tubes, then you can, but you're not going to find a ton for kids.
If you want to do Xcountry or snowshoe, then you can hit Enchanted Forest:

The difference between AF & RR is that, as mentioned previously, AF is really JUST skiing...the "town" has about nothing. RR has a lot more things to do, but the snow is usually better in AF.
Regardless, hope you have a great trip with your family!

This is our first ski vacation so never been to a big or small town. Thanks for the advice and I’ll be sure to check it all out. Guess we will also have to make the trek to Red River one day we are not skiing
Also see that AF is supposed to be getting a few inches of snow today and tomorrow, but nothing next 14 days with highs in the fifties. Hopefully there’s some left

Been a rough year for snow.

Talking to the locals in Red River they haven't had a good snowfall since late November. There's more snow north up there than there is around Angel Fire.

I'd just ski more, but if you really don't want to do that, you can go to Taos to kill some time. There's a good toy store with a playground on the square that our similar aged kids like. Check out the gorge. Some of the desert/gorge hikes should be in good shape. Lots more dining options.

The sledding area is at Angel Fire Country Club. It is the driving range for the golf course in the summer. I don't think it's been open this season due to lack of snow. Your 5 and 8 year old kids will like the skiing at Angel Fire. If they have to have lessons then the ski school is small enough that they will get good instruction and the ski school area has plenty of snow. Almost all of the green runs are open and more than half of the blue runs are open as well as the area where they can do jumps. All of the lifts are open too. The resort has a website with web cams at several locations. You should check those out. El Jefe is a restaurant that overlooks the ski mountain from the base just across the road from the main ski lift. It's a great place to have a drink and/or eat really good Mexican food and hamburgers. Angel Fired Pizza is really good. The country club restaurants are open to the public and very good. Mizuno Grill is really good for a drink and latin food. We've never done the snow mobile tours there.

There is a great free hill just up the road to the right of the main resort. We go there every time we go.

Angel Fire is a great place for new skiers. I’ve been told that it has the longest green run in the Country. Taos is very technical. Great resort and more of a ski town like Vail, but not as fancy. The area around AF, RR and Taos is amazing… the big drawback is that it’s hard to get to.

Go to Winterplace in West Virginia if it is your first trip. Perfect place for kids to learn.
Right next to the interstate. Small area with a tubing hill. Kids can't get lost.
Laid back atmosphere.
They are having some good snow this year.
