For that budget
Franchie affinity
If I was getting it to only be a Turkey gun I would get it in 20ga just cus of the weight and recoil and performance of TSS shells.

All out budget get a benneli SBE 3.5 12ga pistol grip in Sitka optifade with a holographic redot and TSS and shoot them at 125yds like they do on the gram.

Semi just lets you waste 3 shells faster??
I’ve killed them with several different guns/gauges. My favorite is a youth 870 20ga

Less recoil, not that it really matters much in the moment. But it definitely helps when patterning.

On that note though, with TSS a 20 gauge is plenty adequate. While I love my 940 pro turkey, I’ll be hunting with the 500 bantam turkey this year.

ETA: I should also mention that while you don’t need a short barrel on a turkey gun, once you’ve carried an 18.5” bbl through the woods, you won’t want to carry anything longer. It’s helpful when hunting behind a blind or tree as well. I also prefer a shorter LOP because I find it easier to shoot from awkward positions.

I was looking at the Franchi Affinity in 12 ga a couple months ago and really liked how it felt holding it. It was between that and the 12 ga Retay Masai Mara. Ended up liking the Retay more. I could just buy a turkey choke and TSS shells for it but would like a shorter barrel and a lighter gun than the Masai Mara. I know Retay makes the Masai Mara and Gordion in turkey gun models also. The Gordion can be had for under $1,000 but I was wanting to see what other options are out there

I don’t know anything or anyone with a retay. I know several people with franchi and they have not had issues, i think they both use the same type of inertia system as the benneli and they are bulletproof.
For a Turkey gun second shots are not really an issue and that’s where most autos have problems.

I’d get a Turkish 28 gauge over and under

28 gauge with TSS is the best turkey gun in the world. Light as hell and more killing power than 12 gauges with normal lead

I shoot a Savage 301 410 with a Vortex Red Dot (was more expensive than the gun) and a choke that was like $50. Shoot TSS loads and that think is a nice pattern at 60!

Gun was $250 after taxes

Trust me, it's plenty gun to kill big Tom.

I might even saw off the stock and make it a pistol

The weight of a 28 gauge vs a 20 is negligible. So practically speaking, your better off with a 20 over 28, unless recoil is too much. Also, my super bantam turkey (5.25 lbs) weighs over a pound less than the 28 gauge o/u.

Don’t get me wrong, 28 gauge is awesome, and I will likely add a 28 O/U to the collection one day, but it’s not “the best.”

I’ve only shot my Masai Mara a couple of times with some target loads to get use to the gun. So far, I have enjoyed it. Before I bought it, I knew a couple of people that duck hunted with the Gordion model and both really like it. I still didn’t know anything about Retay but when I went to one of my local hunting stores, they said the Retay’s were getting real popular in our area and they have been selling them more than some of the other brands. Plus they had them on sell for $950.

Honestly, I have shot some cheaper shotguns in the past just to shoot but this is the first real shotgun I have bought to use for hunting. I think it feels great holding it and after doing more research on them, it has several cool features on it and I think it is very well made for the price. I think my only complaint with the Masai right now is the recoil pad is pretty stiff and doesn’t absorb that well.

I also know a couple of people that own the Franchi and love it. They use theirs for duck hunting but I never heard them having any issues. Might have to get up with one of them when they are in town and see if they will let me shoot theirs

I got a table gun this year and one of the options was a Retay turkey gun with pistol grip and rail mount 20 ga. I have shot it a few times and it's nice so far. Seem like they ripped a lot of technology from Benelli as much of it looks the same as my SBE's.

Will see how it holds up but for a gun I shoot a handful of times a year I figured it would work. Apparently it takes the same chokes as Benelli which is nice as well.
