I clean them where they fall unless I'm pretty close to my truck. It's quicker than dragging, cleaning, then disposing carcass. I used to have a lil set up to hang them from whatever tree was handy but it's not worth the hassle. The first time or two I cleaned on the ground it took me a bit but now I can have a doe quartered and in my pack in around 15-20 minutes.

This is the way. I switched to this pretty much exclusively about 10-15 years ago. I never go into the woods without 3 trash can (35 gallon) liners to tote deboned meat out in. Even on a buck you can debone and get it all out in one trip. Might have to carry a bag or two of meat in your hands, but it saves hours.

I have one that I use regardless of where I’m hunting. Public land, lease in Oklahoma etc. I love it.

appreciate it sir. i planned on hunting tunica. i know thats the most rugged terrain in LA so i am contemplating on what to do. either A) run the levee with a weighted vest on every day and be in shape to drag that deer out or B) skin it there and tote the meat out

Look up gutless method on YouTube. I’ve also used a rope and gambrel to throw over a limb and pull up with my truck.

That'd help. I usually hike there every chance I get over summer. I just got an ebike that eats the hills out there so I might try deer hunting it again this year.

If hunting Tunica, for sure use method Loup said. Never need to gut the deer and just pack out to a trail and then to truck.

Getting an ATV or even a hand cart down into some of those bottoms is not wise.

But…re: your original question, I carry a hitch attached hoist with me in my truck on public land I have to bring whole deer/hog out. Works great, especially in the evening when check station hoists are full.

Make sure to have you a cutting board on tailgate and knives and ice chest (with ice) ready as well as headlight to do the cleaning. I bought an extendable tripod work light that helps alot.

Yeah I'd go B. There are some good videos on youtube also about deboning it as it lies. Getting a 150lb deer on the four wheeler is not the easiest thing in the world, dragging one out of a place like Tunica is going to take a physical specimen of a human. And of course, they have some hammers back up in there much larger than 150lbs.

what type of pack/size do you have? one big enough for the meat i assume. i found one on tik tok shop that was incredibly cheap and can hold saddle sticks too. only cost $60. it was 35 L

I normally use a Mystery Ranch frame pack. I recently got an Eberlestock X2. Haven't packed meat with it yet but it's much more comfortable and packs sticks/platform better.

I use that same pack/frame; works great.

I lash a Millenium tree seat to it along with layers of clothes going in and have game bags to pack em out. Also added a rifle butt holder to the waist strap which helps on like hikes.

Do you normally fit the game bags in the packpack?

I just use a couple of old pillow cases. You don't even notice they're in there.

How to carry a deer

You could always do this.

I plan on going to Kentucky this year. I plan to just quarter and carry it out.

Game bags fold up to almost nothing; link:
Game bag

can also use garbage bags but they don’t breathe and that’s no bueno if you have a long hike in 90 degree October archery season…cooles meat is good meat.
