Vital tracking technology inside an Army Black Hawk helicopter was turned off for 'no compelling reason' when it collided with a passenger plane over Washington DC last week.
The Black Hawk was performing a routine training mission in an effort to renew 28-year-old Captain Rebecca M. Lobach's annual certification when it crashed into American Airlines Flight 5342 as it was making its final descent at Reagan National Airport just before 9pm on January 29.
When the chopper went down, the Black Hawk's Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast was disabled - a system which shares an aircraft's position, altitude and speed, Sen. Ted Cruz told the New York Times on Thursday.
The technology also includes a display that shows pilots the location of other aircrafts both in the sky or on a runway, and allows air traffic controllers to not just rely on radar tracking - which could have a delay of a few seconds, according to USA Today.
Military helicopters can turn off the ADS-B during 'continuity of government' missions so that nobody can track where government officials are being flown.

After seeing the videos, I just can’t imagine how the pilot didn’t see the landing lights on that aircraft. Those things are incredibly bright from miles away.

This was known and posted in the crash thread the night the crash happened. I saw it as a WTF thing, but it never seemed to get any traction.

If this is true, it pisses me off. She didn’t belong at the controls of a helicopter.

ADS-B is turned off on almost all (and ALL missions) military training flights these days so we can’t be tracked via flight aware and other tracking sites. This would have done nothing to help the airliner or helo in this scenario

What part pisses you off? Every aviator gets an annual “check ride” to renew their qual. You’re expected to sit the seat for that flight.

Simplest answer - they confused plane ATC was talking about, which was below them and to their right, for the inbound flight coming in from above and to their left? If their heads are turned away from the incoming flight, the lights won't register until right before impact?

They didn’t release her name until they scrubbed her from the internet.
She’s the only one.
What happened is they shite they bed on this and didn’t catch a bunch of red flags bc she was considered normal by woke ideology.
Family signed off on it so their “little girl” didn’t live in fricking infamy and the military did it bc the brass doesn’t want that on its resume.
If my daughter was a Blackhawk pilot in DC and a Blackhawk hit a civilian plane I’d probably pick up the phone. They fricking knew.

She was flying with an IP, instructor pilot, if it was a training mission.
"I've got the controls" is a phrase I have heard many times, while being in the back.
Unless the IP also wanted to die, this was an accident.

I guess what irks me is that they felt the need to do this is a way that puts a lot of civilian lives at risk. I still can’t get my arms around the fact that the Army thinks it’s fine to fly training missions with inexperienced pilots across the landing approach path at one of the busiest airports in the country.
