What other venues exist around Baton Rouge that showcase singer songwriters and the niche semi-famous traveling original performers?

Chelsea's will now get those shows if they financially make sense

Never heard of it. (I don’t live in BR but I follow a wide live music scene) Did they get good acts?

I saw Chris Knight there years ago. We brought an ice chest of beer in and put in front of our seats. There was a fridge in the back packed with beer. Some lady told me it was free until it’s gone.

Honestly if Beauvoir could formalize their approach, they would be a perfect venue for the roots/americana stuff that Maxwell books. Especially some of the younger touring musicians like Hayes Carll, Vincent Emerson, Shinyribs, Silverado, etc. that come through RDLR.

beavoir is really not a great venue for that tbh.
1. it's outside
2. they do a bad job of making sure everyone pays for tickets etc
also a lot of shows that chris booked were not great fits for a listening room environment. mike and the moonpies? lol ok
hayes is 49 years old.
kevin is 58 years old.
i've played with Vince. he's a great guy and the BR crowd loved him. his live band is fantastic. He'll get booked at chelseas again at some point. the listening room idea is cool for quiet singer songwriters but not for full blown louder honky tonk bands. dyson house was a better setup for quieter singer songwriters but that went away as well.

Wait when is John Fulbright playing

fullbright played red dragon years ago and he was great in that environment. just him and piano and him on guitar all night.
problem with listening rooms is you don't have a huge demo in BR that actually wants to hear every word of every song and actually listens. there are hardcore singer songwriter fans but they are few and far between. most people just want to social gather and drink. a lot aren't paying attention to the bands they paid to see

Dang rip
Yeah I figured he probably took a normie job and quit since you never hear about him anymore. He’s like the Brian Wilson of turnpike
ETA: the problem isn’t the audiences it’s that music is dying. For every one good band theres like 50 shitty bands so bar owners are better off just putting on free music. Also nobody wants to go out because they can watch Netflix alone and get doordash

I get it...but compared to the other acts that are typical there....

Maxwell relied too much on booking his favorite artists and older artists. His target demographic was 60+ and that demographic is not going to sell out shows every week. His own arrogance and unwillingness to change led to the constant begging for people to attend shows. When he would book “younger” artists, shows would sell out within a few days. Eg. BJ Barham. I will miss seeing shows at the Dragon.

BJ played Mid-City Ballroom as well, they just have not been booking Americana for a few years. They had Lost Dog Street Band and BJ the same week.

you nailed it. he also had his little local clique of openers. as well as wealthy friends who "sponsored" the show to get the opening spot. dirty little secret around baton rouge. oh you want to open for slaid cleaves? "sponsor" the show paying most of his guarantee and i'll let you be the opener etc
did chris book some good shows? yep, he did. he also refused to create a website and only relied on facebook to post his shows. want to come to the show? send him $30 through paypal and if he knew you, you got a good seat. if he didn't know you, you got put in the back

that was 6 years ago though. MCB isn't attracting major talent on a regular basis. if they got a liquor license and renovated the space a bit, it could be a cool spot.
problem is, there aren't enough rabid music fans in BR to support multiple venues on a regular basis.
