Tulum - Activities

Looking for recommendations for tours, activities in the Tulum area. It looks like there are quite a few Cenotes in the area and trying to get an idea on which ones are worth visiting and recommended tour operators. Also, any recommendations for inshore fishing guys in the area? It looks like there could be good inshore fishing just to the south of Tulum.
Any other recommendations activities or things to see or do...Traveling with kids (11-14 yrs old). Planning to stay in Tulum for 3-4 days and then Akumal for 3 days.
Thank you,

We did this tour with this group, I highly recommend it. The guide was wonderful and we did a bunch of different things. The home cooked food was awesome as well.
Mexico Kan Tours
We had another scheduled with them (I think it was Mayan Underground) but they didn't have enough people signed up to run it. We were bummed, but found a snorkeling tour in the bay that was great. I think that group we used was "Los Chichos".

Cenotes, riding around in ATVs, great food, hot half-naked european women everywhere.
Chichen itza is pretty damn cool if you rent a car.

There used to be a bus you could ride, chickens on board as a bonus.

Little known fact about the Tulum area. The world’s first underwear was actually invented there. The factory still exists. You can look it up..
Fruit of Tulum…
I had a local tour guide lay that joke on me years ago when we visited. My kids died laughing. It’s your burden now. LOL..

definitely go climb the coba ruins

if you get there bright and early you can be the first person to head to the pyramid. I rented a bike and hauled arse down the trail and got there. I shot up the pyramid and was able to chill up there for about 15 minutes all alone before anyone else got there. was one of the coolest things I have done in my many travels.

We used this group when we stayed in Maroma. They can set up just about any tour you would want to do.

I usually try my best to not rent a car on vacations out of the country since tours with transportation are usually good and cheap. But Tulum is easy to get around with decent roads and all of the nearby destinations take US cash or card and speak a lot of english.
My recs
- chichen itza (about 2 hours from Tulum)
- Coba ruins (1 hour)
- fill in each day with various cenotes, one of the coolest ones I have been to is Hacienda Cenote Oxmán
Also Merida would require at least 2 days, but its really cool city with great food and historic architecture.

obviously go see the ruins. you'll get hounded to hire a guide, you dont need one but it is helpful. make sure you buy tix for the shuttle, its a long walk from the entrance bazzaar. the site is fairly mind-blowing if you get your headspace right (try and imagine what it looked like back then). dont get gringo snacks at the store, get fruit from the stands along the road

going to the beach road hotel zone is a must. go early to a beach club and/or go mid afternoon to get the lay of the land, make sure you have a reservation somewhere for dinner, then get it on with the insanity in the jungle after dark. its something else

Bumping this back up. How hard is it driving/getting around down there ? would be driving from Cancun to Tulum? I have driven around costa rica and Cabo, but not cancun before. I would obviously get the extra insurance. any recs on renting a car? .

rent a car at your resort
it’s an easy straight shot from Cancun to tulum down a well marked and smooth multi lane highway
If you can’t make that drive you don’t need to be driving period

There are a couple fantastic restaurants and beach clubs in the hotel zone (i.e. ARCA, RosaNegra, Ziggy), but there's little doubt - it's one of the biggest rip-offs on the planet. You aren't saving any money down there. Wife and I lived in Tulum for a little while and, honestly, went to the hotel zone no more than a couple times. Personal preference, but give me taco carts and patio/cocktail bars (i.e. La Negra, Encanto) in Centro.

Can confirm. I own a home in tulum and don't think I have been to one beach club.
Also, make sure to rent a car. Makes your trip way more enjoyable.
