We’re with GEICO currently and looking to switch, most likely to progressive. GEICO has gradually raised the premium over time. I know that adding a teenager first time driver will be a huge hit, especially in Louisiana. Homeowners is with GEICO. I’m less concerned about bundling.

Are there other carriers I should be looking at that offer discounts (good student, driver, etc)?
Should I get the new policy for wife and I first, then add teenager after? Or get everyone together on the new policy right away?
What vehicle do we add the teenager to, if that’s what’s done?
Any other questions I should be asking?

Current coverage details are below. Should we make any changes to this?

100/300 Bodily injury liability
50 property damage liability
50/100 UM

Vehicle 1 - no comp or collision (it’s old)
Vehicle 2 - high deductibles on comp/collision

Don't add him/her to the policy. Insurance is on the vehicle, not the driver. Nothing illegal about it, just a loophole that many people take advantage of.

When you start getting emails about adding a new driver, ignore them. Somehow they know when your kid gets his license. Also, if/when you get them their own car, list yourself as primary driver.

State Farm is cheap for new driver.

Or at least cheaper, but not cheap

You should shop auto *every* six months. If you stick around with the same company, they will continue to charge you more. A new company may charge you less of an increase. It's like the frog slowly boiling.

You probably won't have a choice in bundling to save money, agents get huge incentives for making it happen, and the price savings can be significant. There was another thread on this recently, I don't remember what it was called, but it would be useful for you to learn how agents are compensated for new/existing policies, and it'll make sense. Having a couple of high roller agent neighbors tell me how it works makes me even more disgusted with the industry.

This is some of the worst advice i have ever seen. Almost universally, auto policies have permissive users clauses, but exclude as permissive users those who live in the same household unless they are listed on the policy.

On my 2nd teen driver and progressive has been the cheapest both times we've added one. You can try shopping around but I'll almost guarantee you'll end up with progressive every time. Good luck, hopefully not a boy because they're definitely more expensive.....Ask me how I know

Just switched to USAA who does offer a good student discount and discounts if they've taken defense driving / driver training classes. We bundled and it was worth it for us. Must have military service or close military relation to join.

Yeah. And I'd switch the home owners too. They were the cheapest there too.

My LA Geico policy has nothing of the sort. Actually, it defines "insured" as policy holder, spouse, and relatives living in same household. There is no requirement for each relative to be named on the policy. There are no exclusions regarding permissible use, payment of claims, etc. The only thing excluded is a relative being struck by a vehicle owned by an insured (to prevent paying for scams/ murders I imagine...). and a few other things like rental cars/ uber driving/ etc. I'm sure my advice is risky and shitty, but I'm telling you what my policy states/ doesn't state. Like I said, this is supposedly a Louisiana loophole, tifwiw.

You do you, but I am telling you you are wrong. There is no loophole and if your kid gets into an accident driving a vehicle you own, but is not a listed and named insured on the policy, you wont have liability coverage.

You forget, this board is full of OT ballers that constantly ask about IPTV to pirate entertainment to save a few bucks and put one over on "the man."

Not even a little bit true when it comes to people living in the home listed on the title. Kid gets in a wreck and they aren't on insurance, no insurance pay out.

If you have a way to get into USAA, we saw about a $300/mo decrease switching from Progressive.

Wrong, there's no way you don't have to disclose a teenage driver living in your household.

That doesn't seem too far out of whack, does it? I have two adults, one teenager, and two vehicles paying about half of what you're paying.

What’s your timeline on getting the teenager a vehicle of his/her own? That will be our next mountain to climb.

Dude will be on here raising hell about the crooked insurance companies when he’s left holding the bag when his kid hits a brand new X7.
