Why does this game get lost in the history of LSU football. 2000 LSU vs #13 MS State.

You always hear about the Tennessee win. But beating highly ranked MS state in overtime. They were down by 2 touchdowns late in the second half, and just run right through a number 1 ranked state defense to come back and win in OT. I never heard about this game but it had to be a huge victory at that time for LSU.

That was an awesome game. Fred Smoot was talking shite all week (to a bunch of us students using our dorm computers) on his own website, smootsmack.com, but the Tigers shut him up.

Great game. Managed to get the end zone pylon from that game and have it displayed on my shelf!

That’s as loud as it gets. That entire 4th quarter was sustained deafening noise. Incredible game and comeback. Everyone in the stands collectively could feel it late in the 3rd qtr that we were taking this game back. So great.

2000 was one of the funnest years for Tiger Stadium because at first it looked like same old losing crap, then we had the Tennessee OT win after that Tenn. columnist said Death Valley was dead, the State OT win when they were rolling, and then the first win over Bama in Tiger Stadium since 69. Saban thanked the two streakers on his radio show for waking the crowd up and reenergizing everyone when they did it during that game.

The crowds were raucous back then and the fans were hungry after tasting a little success under DiNardo. The Tennessee and State games were two of the loudest games I remember going to.

Hey bozo read the room. In the year 2000 that was definitely something to brag about, especially considering they were ranked 13 in the nation that year.

Toefield fumbled before he scored the opening TD, but after the phantom call of 99, it was far less perverse. This was a fun game against a good MSU team. Joe Lee Dunn's defenses were solid in that stretch and LSU wore them out.

Remember it well. After the UAB debacle people forget this game because it was sandwich between beating Tennessee at home or at all in forever and the 31 year drought at home against bama.

Fans stormed the field and I remember thinking “it’s state! We should always beat them. “

That was my first game in Tiger Stadium. I was actually wearing maroon cheering for Mississippi State. I was originally from Mississippi, but moved to Louisiana. Now I have 2 degrees From LSU and would never cheer against them

You can call it that. Replay hadn’t been instituted yet but everyone in the stadium and on the field was pointing to the replay board and the refs knew if they wanted to get out alive they had to change the call.

I don’t remember exactly what it was. But for some reason I remember it as a call/ no call pass interference.

I wonder if LSU is forever spoiled because of the 3 modern titles. I think we have an issue now where the stadium is actually too big, and the Average Joe crazy fan can’t afford to go to every game. Add in that our fanbase is spoiled and goes all out for maybe 2-3 games a year, and you have a less intimidating Tiger Stadium.

Was a great game to be at, the noise was top 5 for me. Jackie Sherrill and MSU had some good defenses right in that time frame.

My first game ever as a youngin... I am pretty sure it was a clear recovery on a fumble that they ruled in our favor after looking up at the replay. "Replay Game" is the day I fell in love. Never saw a more beautiful site, at that time, than the eye of the tiger mid field.

Yeah was at all 3 and totally crazy noise; I recall was a punt return fumble or recovery?
Yes just not the same today with the expensive TAF seats although OM game was pretty loud and OKLA sometimes.

It was a punt from Bama to LSU in the 4th quarter with LSU leading 23-21. LSU muffed the kick but clearly recovered. Refs initially (correctly) called catch interference then waved it off, and to make things worse they inexplicably awarded the ball to Alabama. Somehow they forgot that LSU recovered.

Long discussion ensued until they eventually got the call right after apparently sneaking a peek at the screen where the video operator was replaying it on a loop.

You can watch the whole sequence here starting at 3:03:39 (around 3:07:30 you can see Bradie James and other Tigers huddled around the refs and pointing up to the SEZ video screen):
