The funniest part of this entire battle is the American F22's that were itching for the Russian Flankers to offer a fight but the Ruskies wisely decided discretion was the better part of glory

That being said it was a good thing QRF was on the ball as the Marines had exhausted their Javelin ammo

I've seen Pravda has been reporting, which has been independtly confirmed by Glenn Greenwald, that Russia actually shot down each F22 that was in the area while said F22s were trying to bomb schools and churches

It's also been reported that they found a stack of Mein Kempfs in the wreckage

I'm just waiting for some of the Russo-bots to post a twitter link with that.

There are plenty of funny lines.

Kurdish guy sees what is going on and turns around, Green Beret says, "That's the smartest guy on the battlefield."

Off brand Snickers bar. The Russians turning off the S-400s to leave the Wagner guys to get smoked. T-72s not having thermal sites in 2018

One Wagner fighter described it as, "A Merry go round with heavy caliber machine guns."

Centcom: Just be advised, Incoming Bomber.
Green Beret: Roger
Centcomm: No, dude, a Russian bomber.

I forgive you for being a Jarhead pumper and giving short shrift to the Green Berets, Delta, Rangers, F-15Es, AC-130W, B-52H and Apaches that were also involved. Jesus Christ, we threw the kitchen sink at a bunch of contractors

Apologies, spent a lot of time around some cool marines when I was in TAR with the Navy

I was always accused of "over fraternizing"

That was actually the Ghost of Kyiv piloting each of those airplanes simultaneously by himself.

Yeah, this is like bragging about Grenada. We threw 3 aircraft carriers, 2 Amphibs, a division of Marines, the Rangers and the 82nd Airborne at a few Cuban infantrymen with a half dozen APC’s. Of Course you won.

Just goes to show you the importance of air power and owning the skies above the battlefield. As soon as the Apaches showed up it was night-night for those T-72s. Then we hit them with some F-15s, C-130s, and B-52s for good measure.

They got lit the freak up.

There is some thought that the Russian government basically intentionally left the Wagner guys out to dry in something of a "the tallest weed gets cut first" kind of attitude. Not completely out of thin air given how internal politics work over there (and what happened to Prigozhin).

It'd be interesting to see how things would go today in a similar situation given how much modern warfare has changed over the last three years. They have learned a lot and have adapted to modern warfare in a way that only sustained combat can really teach a force. The contractors or special purpose units or whoever would likely start with smaller UAVs to prod and degrade then progress to heavier stuff both air- and ground-based. No matter, in all likelihood they couldn't prevent American airpower from getting out into the open field, and it's lights out at that point, anyway.

There isn't a military in the history of the world that would even stand a sniff of a chance against American special operators with air support in the 2010's. Fifteen-plus years of combat with constant real world practice in joint operations and combined arms warfare for the best-resourced and best-trained units in the history of the planet tends to lead to results like this.

I mean, when the Iranians shot down the airliner leaving from Tehran, that could be chalked up to sheer incompetence. But Prigozhin?

Deadliest people on a battlefield? CCTs and FACs. I'm a little sad that there weren't A-10s involved, but when you have a BUFF just doing what it feels like, wait, I think I'm getting a stiffy.

I mean, the Russians were (and still are, to some degree, but certainly less so) incompetent as frick. I wouldn't rule out at all that they were just totally confused as buttfricked as to what was being asked of them and that there was bureaucracy and poor communication involved; that kind of thing happens to even the very best units that have ever walked the earth, as they are still human organizations after all. ODAs had several instances of dropping CAS on either friendlies or clearly neutrals, DEVGRU has had their morale and discipline issues, etc., and they are lightyears better than anything the Russian government or private contractors can throw out there.

But I do still think there is a distinct possibility that was intentional on the Russian government's part. It'll be fascinating when this sort of thing gets declass'd in fifty years.

And a good weapons squad leader.

And ODA team commanders and MSG's who are often operating without FACs and CCTs, along with CAG and DEVGRU troop commanders and CSMs and MCPOs, and so forth. When I was in and especially when I was in theater, probably one of my biggest takeaways was, if you wanted to be an excellent small unit leader when you were faced with the real deal, how goddamn amazing the junior and mid-level officers and senior and mid-level NCOs were in both special operations and many line units at coordinating fires, stacking assets, seeing the battlefield in three dimensions, having a four-dimensional sense of enemy vulnerability, etc. It's really a gift for some people, especially to be able to do it while under contact and maintaining your cool.

WW3 started a just this. In 2018 I sure didn't think the US would over throw Asad in less than 10 years.

Now I'm surprised he's alive.
