I am currently a director which is 3 steps up the management chain at my company. Manager, sr manager, director.

I just had 2 development resources (non manager) transferred under me, one of which has a higher base salary than myself.

I've already messaged my direct boss that we are going to have a good conversation about it. How would you handle?

How is your total compensation figured? I wouldn't be upset with that if my total comp was still higher/significantly higher than theirs.

If you are requesting a higher base salary expect your bonus structure to change (for the worse).

As a director, your pay is performance based.

Fire a bunch of people and tell him he deserves a bonus increase for there being a budget surplus under his watch.

My employer won't allow a direct report to make more than their manager. This is an HR thing, but how did you find out his/her salary? You're in delicate territory.

Looks like you’re already in the process of “handling.” I think the outcome is likely to be really good or really bad for you. That’s using only the information in the OP.

Is your pay more incentive laden? I would look at the overall pay and not just base pay.

Which is better: $100k base with no incentives or bonuses built in….or $75k base but with an extra $50k or more in reasonably attainable incentives?

The base salary isn't the whole picture. What's the rest of your compensation structure like? If you make more than this guy, don't worry about it. PTO is a massive benefit for me personally because I refuse to work my life away and miss stuff with the kids (this past Tuesday's snow, holidays, birthdays, etc.). I recently took a slight paycut in order to have unlimited PTO because that's important to me. I feel the happiest I've ever felt professionally now.

There's more to this than just your base salary and you shouldn't go making an arse of yourself to your boss over only one piece of the puzzle.

It is, and I have received exceeds expectations for every review I've been with the company. Bonuses are % based and mine are higher than the 2 new resources, but not substantially higher.

Is visible to me in Workday since they report to me now.

Fantastic analysis.

There’s also a 3rd option of a minimal impact.

Why do people assume everyone gets performance based bonus structures? Tons of jobs do not, such as government workers.

On the surface benefits are the same. PTO is based on years with the company. I have been here longer.

Bonus structure is the same % based approach.

The 2 resources rely on me heavily as the lead. I even help with their development tasks.

Who has longer seniority, you or the transfer?

If they have 5 years on you, it makes sense they may earn more base.

Nevermind, I see you answered in another post.
