Making a quick trip to Mountain Home TX for a work event. Will be driving from BR. Will 90% of the drive looks like it will be I-10, thru San Antonio, continuing Northwest. I’ve been to San Antonio but never further west. Are there any landmarks or hidden gems I should check out once we get passed San Antonio? Bonus points for the best BBQ.

There are lots of threads on the Texas Hill Country, west of San Antonio. Boerne (bernie) is not too far outside SA is a nice little town as is Comfort and Kerrville. Lots of scenic drives in the Hill Country and nice state parks, i. e. Garner state park, Enchanted Rock and Pedernales to name a few.

To me that area is just Hill Country, West Texas is further west.

This is correct.

"West Texas", depending on latitude, doesn't begin until you get west of at least Abilene, San Angelo, Sonora, etc.

And then there's "Far West Texas", which is beyond West Texas. Texas is a big place.

Texas is 808 miles wide if you stay on I-10, so from the Louisiana line to San Antonio is 325 miles... and the Texas Hill country is west of there. Still worth the drive. Bring a pee bottle if you go west of there!

Much further west than Mountain Home will require lots of time & miles between stops. Your bang for the buck will be better with something more like Boerne/Kerrville/Fredricksburg sort of circuit. Throw in a little Luckenbach.

Way west TX is borrrring.

Fully agree. Add in Bandera, the Cowboy Capital of the World.

I live in Boerne. There’s not much west of here for a while. Enchanted Rock and Lost Maples are great nature parks.

Burnt Been in Seguin is good BBQ but extremely difficult to get into. I’d recommend Schulze’s Pit Room as an alternative. It’s right on I-10 as well.
Leroy’s in Fredericksburg is a hidden gem. Get the bbq nachos if you go.
Downtown Kerrville is also a cool little spot. Beyond that just enjoy the beauty of the Hill Country ( not West Texas )

Appreciate all the feedback. You’re right, I should have said Hill Country. I forget just how much further West TX goes AFTER San Antonio.
