quote:

The Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak (EAST) nuclear fusion reactor maintained a steady, highly confined loop of plasma — the high-energy fourth state of matter — for 1,066 seconds on Monday (Jan. 20), which more than doubled its previous best of 403 seconds, Chinese state media reported.

If it ever works, it'd be by far the best combination of clean and efficient energy we could have

Yeah it's not like an independent source can fact check them

Nuclear Fusion is very different from Nuclear Fission. Fission is what we use around the world and all of the hazards alongside with it. Fusion basically stops when the reactor stops.

I'm sure someone can explain it better

1. They’re probably lying.
2. They most likely consumed way more energy sustaining that reaction than they got out of it.

In the article:

quote:

Nuclear fusion reactors are nicknamed "artificial suns" because they generate energy in a similar way to the sun — by fusing two light atoms into a single heavy atom via heat and pressure. The sun has a lot more pressure than Earth's reactors, so scientists compensate by using temperatures that are many times hotter than the sun.

This is where we should be spending billions of govt dollars on research

Not on wind and solar subsidies

They're the best power plant in SimCity 2000. You unlock them in 2050. Two of them will power damn near the entire fricking map.

That's about the extent of my knowledge of fusion reactors.

I wonder what man-made device can hold something at those temperatures without melting? May be time to utilize the Google machine some.

This way we get not kilotons, but megatons.

Levitating the object using an electro-magnetic field is what I found but we've been making objects hotter than the sun for a couple decades now.

Creating a nuclear fusion power source will be the next watershed moment in terms of technology advancement, a lot of research has been stifled by the lack of power. Nuclear Fusion would be unlimited "clean" power.
