What’s the % markup on your cars? Need to negotiate one for my dad and don’t want to be ripped off. Would dealerships sell at break even to move inventory?

Yeah dealerships love it when they don’t create profit.

They do sell at breakeven on occasion but what other business do you expect to make a deal with you where they profit nothing?

The grocery store makes money off the groceries you purchase. Gas stations make money off the gas you buy. Retail stores make money on the clothes you buy. Car dealers make money on the cars you buy.

Markup depends on vehicle, & manufacturer. Group I work for has Chevy, Buick, GMC, & Hummer, Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, & Ram, Lincoln, Ford, & Toyota, and several hundred preowned vehicles representing several more brands. There is no set % markup, I.e. 10%, but I’d be more than happy to show our cost on the unit, manufacturer’s incentives, and negotiate from there.

Right but you don't really expect people to believe that this is factual, do you?

Totally depends on the brand.

GMC, Chevy, Ford, others, yes... plenty.

On the other hand, Hondas have very little markup on them from Factory Invoice. Base Civics/HRV's have less than $1000, and top of the line Pilots/Odyssey's have maybe like $3k or so.

it's usually pretty close at the time of sale. The true cost is often not known for months depending on volume bonuses/rebates and such.

They also get paid based on how many new units they sell a month. So yes they will sometimes even lose money on a deal to get the unit sold.

And even if they loseoney on the actual price of the car, they can make it up on the trade in, financing, accessories, etc.

No real way to show it, have buildings, utilities, license & title workers, etc. to pay for, but they should understand an invoice & cost for the particular unit that they are interested in…

It's 2025, there's no ripping off. A few years back? Sure. Market was on fire. Low supply, absurd demand.

Expects for profit companies to be a non profit.

Are you a Honda dealer? Went to two dealerships and got a brand new 24 accord. Both offered below invoice price to get rid of left over 24s.

And they all say the same thing, Honda only goes down 1-2k on new vehicles.

probably some incentive to move an older model. also don't know what the rest of the deal looked like. was there a trade, extended warranties, financing? also could have been close to hitting a volume bonus.

Lil girl is looking at making her first "big girl" purchase, as she calls it. She likes the Mazda CX50's. Appears to have solid reviews but I know frickall about a Mazda.

No trade or extended warranty. Over 3k under msrp price with 1.9% financing. Mid tier model. Thought I did pretty good figuring people were getting bent over paying over sticker a couple years ago. And normal interest rates are still pretty high.
