John Sykes has passed from cancer. When people mention underrated and under-appreciated guitarists, his name is at the top of many lists. His work with Whitesnake in the early to mid 80s is often overlooked or credited to others. Blue Murder, Thin Lizzy, Tygers of Pan Tang all benefited from his guitar work.

I never cared for Whitesnake but his work in Tygers and TL was as good as it gets.

Look man, if your name is up there with the others that played guitar in Thin Lizzy you are really, really good.

David Coverdale owes this guy big time. Eddie Trunk said he didn't even know Sykes had cancer. Sykes kept it quiet.

That guitar tone from the 87 album for Whitesnake was great. Still of the Night slays.

I’ve been listening to this album quite a bit the last couple of months:

John Sykes - Bad Boy Live

His tone on Blue Murder's first album was ridiculous.

You should check out the Screaming Blue Murder live album that was originally released only in Japan in 1994:

His performance of Still Of The Night is amazing:

The funny thing about this video is that none of the musicians in it actually played on the 1987 album. David Coverdale fired all the musicians who played on the 1987 album including John Sykes who also co-wrote most of the songs on the album.

It is awesome, but I actually think “Still of the Night” on John’s Bad Boy Live! album is my favorite version of the song I’ve ever heard.

I saw Blue Murder open up for Bon Jovi at the Monroe Civic Center in 1989. Skid Row opened most of the New Jersey album tour for them but dropped off for about 20 shows & Blue Murder opened for that leg that we saw. They completely blew Bon Jovi(who is way overrated live anyway) off the stage. They played Still of the Night & it sounded amazing. RIP.

I was definitely into Blue Murder around that time. My mom and sister went to see Bon Jovi in Chattanooga on that tour and I was “too cool” to be caught at a Bon Jovi show. When they got home, I asked who opened and my mom said, “Some band I’ve never heard of. I think maybe Blue Murder? They were great.” I was so pissed off I missed that!
