Well this is drawing a lot of controversy.

It was only used for two minutes but it was a key two minutes in the film and is drawing A LOT of ire from purists who even believe this should disqualify him from awards contention.

quote:

The decision to use A.I. was born out of the need to supplement a small part of Brody and Jones’ Hungarian speaking skills. “I am a native Hungarian speaker and I know that it is one of the most difficult languages to learn to pronounce,” he said.

Jancsó added, “It’s an extremely unique language.”

The moment in question is a roughly two-minute segment of the movie in which a letter from Brody’s character to his wife is read aloud. The letter is read in full in Hungarian, and it is understood by TheWrap that no other part of the actor’s performance was augmented with Respeecher.

“If you’re coming from the Anglo-Saxon world certain sounds can be particularly hard to grasp,” he said. “We first tried to ADR these harder elements with the actors. Then we tried to ADR them completely with other actors but that just didn’t work. So we looked for other options of how to enhance it.”

The team used Respeecher to record the actor’s voices and then add in A.I. words in Hungarian. Jancsó’s voice is also in the film. “Most of their Hungarian dialogue has a part of me talking in there. We were very careful about keeping their performances,” he explained.

Two minutes or two hours, I feel like this has the ability to open Pandora's box.

I think AI doing lines is going to become pretty common before long. I imagine this will be pretty prevalent in video games sooner than later.

This is just a fancier version of dubbing an actors lines.

It’s been done ever since talkies came onto the scene.

What an unforced error just to appease the few that can speak Hungarian. I watched it earlier today and his character spoke in Hungarian several times and it didn’t sound off to me.

Brody and The Brutalist were the front runners for Actor and Picture. I hate to see them not get the recognition they deserve. What they were able to accomplish with only $10 million is pretty incredible, especially with a 215 minute runtime.

ETA: This better not affect Guy Pearce’s chance for Supporting Actor.

I'm afraid it's more than that considering last year's Hollywood strikes centered around concerns regarding AI in the film industry. It's a hot button issue in the business right now and most people who aren't producers and directors absolutely HATE the idea of it being used.

I don't think two minutes of using a program to augment his speech should disqualify the man from awards contention.

Movies have dubbed in singing portions for actors for decades.

I watched Back to the Future over the holidays the dance scene where McFly sings was dubbed.

Should that disqualify MJF from any potential awards?

Michael J. Fox was never in awards consideration for 1985's Back to the Future.

Right, he wasn't playing a singer in BttF, so it doesn't seem like an apples to apples comparison.

I do, if only to set the precedent and keep AI as far away from actual art and film as possible.

Did they win awards?

If youre just trying to make bank, fine. But trying to say we augmented this talentless fool, they recognition seems stupid

Lets give this guy the NBA MVP. Pay no attention to the springs we secretly installed in his shoes

Why should film get a pass? Everyone else has to worry about AI taking their job.

Rami Malek won an Oscar for his dubbed singing in Bohemian Rhapsody

That is definitely true.

However, there was no way that any actor on this planet was going to be able to replicate Freddie Mercury's singing voice. It was among the most unique, most powerful, and most recognizable in the history of rock and roll. There are likewise those in the awards community who regard Rami Malek's Oscar win as being among the weakest in recent Academy history.

I will give Malek this: he nailed Mercury's speaking voice and mannerisms.

Ugh. Brody is an incredible actor but I'm not a fan of this. I'd prefer them to put their foot down and take him out of contention. Sucks for Brody but I'd rather them set a precedent. God I hate AI.

They used AI to fix a voiceover where Brody’s character is reading a letter. I can maybe understand needing it for a scene that required a lot of extras, but all you had to do was lock Brody in a recording studio with a Hungarian voice coach until he gets it right.

It is my understanding they also used AI to help design some of the buildings, which makes it more complicated. But in the end, it sounds like they used AI the way it will in the future of filmmaking -- as a tool, not a replacement. I personally have built reference images from AI, but we are not allowed to use them on screen. Those tools sometimes spurn more creativity while speeding up the process.

The nomination votes are already in, so Brody will certainly be up for Best Actor. He may lose some votes from the actors, but as a voter myself --- it does not change my view of his performance, which was remarkable.
