For those 55+ on TRT

At what number did you get on TRT?
-My Testosterone Serum Level is 664 (middle of the normal range)
-My Free Testosterone Direct is 6.1 (the normal level starts at 7.2).
My regular doctor (I go every few years for a physical) says as long as a man's libido is high he doesn't need testosterone, and mine is high.
I'm pushing 60 and have really started to notice a loss of upper body muscle mass, especially biceps. I've never lifted much (I do cardio - 7 miles a day of walking) but every year or two I will get in a routine of lifting that lasts a few months.
What say old-timers of OT? Should I go to one of the "men's clinics" and get on TRT? I'll certainly start lifting regularly is so.
If you are on TRT what are the negative side effects? Otherwise I'm very healthy and never been on any prescription medications.
For those on TRT did you get into lifting once you started? How many days/week?
I know, health board.
All advice and insults are appreciated.

Why wouldn’t you just do that anyway? Why would you think you wouldn’t lose muscle as you age if you don’t workout?

I’m no expert…and we have some on this board…but your numbers are fine for a man your age. I’m almost there and at about the same level.
There’s your prescription if you’re worried about muscle loss. I’ve been hitting it for a year and even at 53 I’ve seen a difference. Lift and eat a shite ton of protein.

What's going to spur you to get on TRT?

47 and levels around 1100 with TRT.
If your libido is good now and you get on TRT, get ready.
100% recommend

How fat are you? How is your sleep? Answer those two questions very honestly first, before moving forward.
Your numbers are pretty decent. However, the numbers are secondary to how you feel and function. Everyone has a specific set point, this is why the population range is so large.
If your sleep is not all that great you will see improvement from fixing sleep. It can change things quite dramatically. If you are carrying around extra body fat, you will see improvement from shedding some pounds. Address those two items and with your next labs you may see some movement in the numbers and you may feel better as well. If you can make some lifestyle adjustments and forego TRT, that is the way to go. Makes life more convenient, you save money, and you don't have to worry about what happens if you go off of TRT.

I’m within range for my age and from what I’ve read once you do TRT you do it forever…and unless you’re really low for your age the benefits aren’t that impressive. Until my boys give up making it I’m not going to fire them.
If it’s muscle mass you’re worried about ditch the cardio and start busting your arse in the gym. You’re not going to gain like an 18 yr old but lifting heavy and eating right will fix you up. I’ve been consistently gaining muscle when I eat enough to feed it.
ETA: with that amount of walking you’re a mass burning machine. Which is good if you want to be lean but you’re losing muscle. Find a macro calculator to figure out your calories, eat a shite load of protein and start lifting heavy.

6 ft 2 in and my NTE weight is 200, I do try to stay above 190 though.
My sleep sucks, as you get older, you'll probably find that going to sleep and staying asleep (without sleep aids) gets hard and harder.

I wouldn't supplement it in myself without a clear deficiency.

If I want to cut weight, fasted walking is the way to do it. But your body cuts both fat and muscle…even if you’re training. It sounds like you’re in pretty good shape but 7 miles a day is burning calories and unless you’re feeding this activity you’ll lose muscle mass along with fat.
Figure out your macros from an online calculator and start training. It sounds weird but forcing yourself to eat more while training is the cheat code. You main gain a little bit of fat but it beats wasting away and once you find that sweet spot you can game it.
ETA: I’m 53, 6’5 and am at 224….started at 240 a year ago.

Yes, but how old are you? I think most find their bodies start to decline as they push 70.

Are you looking for a solution to your OP or affirmation that you can just get a shot and everything will get better?

Young.
But I take care of a lot of folks who get it prescribed from people more interested in their money than their health (I prescribe it, too, when appropriate). Seeing normal LDLs go to over 190 and Hgb in the low/mid 20s are regular occurrences when unecessarily supplementing them. I have seen cardiac and cerebrovascular events that are more likely to be attributed to testosterone supplementation than any other cause.
Bodies will decline with time regardless of what you do with them. When mine does, this ain't what I'm reaching for. But there are plenty of places to obtain it with fewer symptoms and even better levels than you have if that's your thing.

Seems more like affirmation

No worries…the reality is aging sucks.
My numbers are better than average but I still was considering TRT and when I went down that rabbit hole I figured that the juice wasn’t worth the squeeze. My numbers are decent and how much if this “unhappiness” is due to middle age vs hormone issues? Who knows?
But I will say the last year of grinding in the gym has been a high point and has been a lot of fun.
My advice would be don’t do TRT unless you’ve put the work in yourself and see no benefit. At our ages we’re lucky to have the numbers we have.
