Andrew Hatch: How Soon We Forget the First Half of the Year

Let's get something straight right now--Andrew Hatch was more than just a good kid, he was an SEC-caliber QB relative to what else was out there this season, and he DEFINITELY fricking earned his scholarship and proved himself a proud Tiger. Hell, a good case can be made that he was the MVP for the first half of the season just for keeping things relatively calm on offense.
He played in 5 of LSU's first 6 games, during which the very worst the offense did was scoring 21 points against Florida in The Swamp. Note that's more than any team scored against Florida all season, with the sole exception of Ole Miss. Just ask Georgia, Florida State, Alabama, and Oklahoma how easy it is to score on Florida away from The Swamp.
Who saved the day against Auburn and South Carolina? When Lee threw his pick 6's against Auburn, UF, and SC, who was there to come into the game and settle the team down? Who generated most of the offense for LSU at Auburn on the ground before Charles Scott got going in the second half? How much did LSU miss Hatch when it went 2-4 to finish the season with an ugly win over Tulane and a near loss to Troy?
Andrew Hatch last season >>> Chris Smelley, Kodi Burns, Casey Dick, Nick Stephens, Jonathan Crompton, Chris Todd, Tyson Lee, Mackenzi Adams, Randall Cobb, Chris Nickson, Wesley Carroll, etc., etc., etc.
When LSU couldn't pass, the Tigers' only hope before the Arkansas game was to just run Hatch, and he was pretty damn reliable.
For those with shitty memories, here are Hatch's SEC stats:
22 rushes, 94 yards, 8-14 passing, 80 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT
Here's what he did in the first half on the road starting against Auburn when LSU struggled to gain 105 yards and stay within 14-3 at halftime ( LINK):
6 rushes, 31 yards, 2-6, 16 yards, 0 INT
(when not getting sacked twice by Sen'Derrick Marks)
Here's what he did in the first half on the road against South Carolina, helping to keep LSU within a TD at halftime ( LINK):
3 rushes, 16 yards, 1-2, 3 yards, 0 INT
Not spectacular, obviously, but I think it's pretty obvious looking at the first half of the season versus the second half that he played a very useful role in changing things up and giving other teams something else to look at so they couldn't just start teeing off on our passing game because we couldn't block and pass for shite.
So all the haters, please STFU.

doc i've said it to friends and on the message boards that i thought hatch did a exceptional job in controlling tempo and relaxing the team. think back and remember how little confidence crowton showed in hatch. he very seldom let him throw the ball. one thing that seperated hatch from lee was that hatch was not scared to take a hit for the team. i'm gonna miss the young man and wish him well in whatever life holds in store for him in the future.

People hating on Hatch are the same ilk that say anything short of winning the SEC CG and playing in the BCS CG is a failed season. Hatch busted his *ss, performed remarkably well under some very difficult circumstances and will always, ALWAYS be a Tiger.
Very well said, Doc.

Good post Doc. I was hoping Hatch would stay as a sort of sideline QB coach, and backup; wish him the best in the future.

I like Hatch and think he is a smart QB that would be great to have on the team. But as far as a starting SEC caliber guy, the only school he should start for is in MSU.

Andrew Hatch pass complete to Richard Dickson for 7 yards for a TOUCHDOWN.
one of my favorite plays of the year.

going to be interesting to see where he turns up....
he did a good job for LSU and will always have the national championship ring....if he does end up back at Harvard...i can't wait to see the interview in the campus paper....
if he stayed, i don't think he'd ever play another down...
another thing to consider...he's a Mormon from Nevada...the culture shock of coming to South Louisiana may have been too much for him....

those stats fricking suck dude
and he wasn't even that good of a runner. we'd have been better off putting in j-mitch at QB for "changeup" plays

darn shame someone made a post to commend a young man who played as hard as he could for LSU.Thanks for setting everyone straight SFP and reminding everyone he sucked. We can always count on you to minimize and devalue anything positive about LSU.

Hey Doc
cant persecute a kid for trying especially when he was trying for my team.

You probably should have left the stats out of your post. The rest is well received. Hatch Rocks!

as opposed to people trying to say he was in the top half of QBs in the SEC? which one is more ridiculous?

the only thing i'm devaluing is the overrated status of andrew hatch
i'm glad he's transferring, for him. he's not SEC caliber and he may get a chance to play football on a lower 1-AA team

+2
Frankly, I think one of the big problems this past year was a lack of what Hatch brought to the team. Leadership and focus. If the rest of the team had played to its potential like Hatch did, this past season would have been a lot different.
