Headed to Madrid in February.

I have to go to Seville for work, so I'm taking my mom and my son to Madrid for 5 days/4 nights before heading south to Seville.

It's been 10 years since I've been to Madrid and last time I was there was right out of college, so the goal was cheap food and cheap booze.

What are some can't miss things in Madrid and the surrounding areas?

I'm heading to Spain in April, starting and ending in Madrid.

I have never been before, so obviously I don't have any recs, but in my preliminary research I'm finding that 3 nights is plenty to see and do just about everything in Madrid. With the time you have you could probably work in a day trip to Toledo.

Please report back on your experience!

Personally I am not a fan of Madrid as a tourist destination. Its the capital so they do not think of themselves as a tourist site. More english speakers if that's an issue in places like Barcelona.

If you take day trips out there are some great places to see stuff like Segovia and Toledo. Def recommend those.

What Madrid does have going for it is 2 of the very best museums in all of Europe, and some really incredible restaurants.

I should add, while in Seville (I love Seville btw), definitely do a rooftop tour of the Gothic Cathedral. It is super fascinating

I have recently been to Madrid, Seville, and Valencia for work and pleasure.
For a five day trip to Madrid, I'd recommend at least 2 days trips as you'll see a lot of Madrid in 3 days. Toledo is a can't miss and then there are Wine Tours to Rioja or Ribero Del Duero (not sure of the age of your son, but the latter being my personal favorite and about an hour closer to Madrid).
A closer option to Seville would be Lisbon.

Madrid has amazing tapas places, better than even San Sebastain IMO. There is a little street called de la Cava Baja that is full of tapas restaurants the best IMO being Taberna la Cava, Lamiak and Taberna La Concha that also has its own vermut (vermouth) that is amazing. Other good places nearby are La Taberna Errante and El Madroño. We ate brunch at EatMyTrip which despite the shitty name, was fantastic.

If you want some tapas dos and don'ts, watch this guy:

It's obviously your itinerary, but when you say you're going to "Seville for work", how long are we talking about? Because as much as I like Madrid, if I only got to pick one city in Spain to be a tourist in, it would be Seville, and it wouldn't be particularly close.

Agreed about Sevilla.

Plus you can easily daytrip to Ronda which I love.

I haven't been to it yet, but the Prado Museum is one of the more famous sites in Madrid. I fully intend to check it out the next time I happen to be in Madrid.

El Retiro Park is nice.

Mercado de San Miguel is pretty cool for food/drinks.

Take a day trip to Toledo. Really cool fortress town.

Take another one to Alcala de Henares. That's one that won't hit most peoples radars, but it's a cool small town outside Madrid. Birthplace of Cervantes.

I'll be in Seville for a week after this. I work in global logistics, so we're in a network that has people from all over the world that will be visiting with us there.

They usually do a good job of giving us a free day and then a few evening activities tied around the cities we are in.

Last year was Mexico City, which was awesome until Montezuma's Revenge showed up.

Big skip from me. What? ANOTHER religious painting? It drained me. I felt I got the gist of it halfway through the first floor.

Ditto. $80 Uber there, no Uber back. Cab back was $100. But worth it. If cheaper transportation is available, go for it.

I preferred Museo Reina Sofía which has 20th century art.

Dude, there's a direct train line from Madrid to Toledo that takes like 30 minutes and costs like $15. Did you not ask anyone while you were there?
