Why do they need a new Stadium? Why can't old stadiums be reworked? Is it necessary?

they don't, it's a money grab for the owner, never for the community

It seems so wasteful - I wonder what shelf life is structurally

They can get a new city to build them a new stadium, holding their current city hostage.

usually a case of the ownership wants a new toy, and all of the perks that come with it, but wants the community, i.e. the taxpayers to subsidize the majority of it, I read a pretty interesting(to me,) article about this years ago and at the time of the article there wasn't a single example of a new stadium being built in any major sport that benefitted the communities the long run, gist of the article was the cons of replacing Fenway Park

no

ETA: it's been a while but I believe the city of Arlington put up $325million, NFL loaned him $150million, and he put up $500million but he has made more that back in spades because he was able to oust NFL sponsors and required vendors, created Legends Hospitality and has his own little empire

Stadiums are basically disposable at this point.

It’s about money for the owner.

NFL owners get most/all the revenue that’s generated from the suites they sell in their own stadium; whereas; the revenue from regular tickets is spilt with the other 31 teams. So, owners want stadiums with lots and lots of suite / specialty seating so they collect more money.

If the old stadium is built in a way that new suites aren’t doable, the owner pushes for a new stadium, paid for by the taxpayers of course.

1. Thank you for declaring that you mean what you eventually said. I’m sure we’re all better off for getting that clarification even if it feels like you wasted time with extra words like a woman.

2. I agree. The new stadium is open air just like the current stadium and it will seat about 10,000 fewer people. To earn an increase in revenue, they have to charge more to a lot more fans. I wonder what benefits those fans are going to be willing to pay for.

It’s not just about the actual game anymore - a field, a seat, a few concession stands, and a piss trough.

It’s about the fan experience - Craft beers, virtual games, high priced merchandise, WiFi, etc.

I don’t think you can make a blanket statement that the stadiums never benefit the community. Jerry World has been pretty awesome for the community. Final Four, CFB championship, plenty of college football regular season games, Wrestlemania, Supercross, Super Bowl (although weather turned that into a fiasco), PBR World Finals, and numerous World Cup matches (including the semi-final). Most of those events were not going to Arlington without that stadium being built there.

not disputing that there have been financial benefits to the city but as far as the financing, it's usually forced on Joe Sixpack in the form of long term bonds and old Joe and his family likely will never see the inside of the place

ETA: old Joe will likely still be paying for that stadium after the new one becomes "dated" and the owner wants a new toy
