New Iberia baws - Is there hope for da Berry?

Besides continuing to offer the world’s greatest haircut, do you anticipate a positive impact from the recent economic development, including growth of the biopharmaceutical sector at NIRC and Progress Point Business Park, construction of First Solar’s manufacturing plant, and expansion of the Port?
I used to enjoy dinner and drinks at Le Rosier or Clementine and a show at the Sliman years ago with my friends. But most of them have moved to Broussard or Youngsville and have written off their hometown. Do you think these new jobs will improve the overall quality of life? Who will fill them—oilfield baws, h-1bs, carpetbaggers?
Given the history of Louisiana fricking up most everything that could improve our standard of living, what’s your prognosis?

Imagine having to move to Broussard/youngsville just to find a job

You are obviously not from New Iberia. The NIRC is a monkey mating facility, no research going on there. Those solar plants are enormous (52 acres of air conditioned room), but they are still being built and I don't think they will ever manufacture anything. The Port is deader than a door knob except for some government skimming by our Port Commissioner.
I don't know a single local who has ever had a drink at La Rosier (it is a bed and breakfast) and Clementines has been closed for several years and is occupied by a third or fourth restaurant since then that nobody goes to.
It is dangerous and violent here, particularly on the West Side, and it is spilling over into the downtown area. Most residence live on the North Side, across the bayou, which has a very low crime rate. However, the demographics are changing rapidly with most of the productive population moving away (many to Youngsville, Broussard and Lafayette).
The funny thing is that Youngsville is below sea level and has no levee protection, so all those properties will flood after years of paying enormous insurance premiums. Many developments around Broussard are the same way.
To answer your question, no there is no hope for NILA. It will become a large Jeanerette in about 20 years. But then so will all of Louisiana in about 50 years. Outmigration is the beginning of the end.

I hate to hear this. I grew up a block from, what used to be, the country club on Henry St. Back then we would ride our bikes to City Park, downtown, Paradise(essentially a rope swing over Bayou Teche, etc. because crime was pretty much non-existent.

You’re correct. I’m not from New Iberia. But I’ve lived within a 10 minute drive for 25 years and recall when Le Rosier had a gourmet restaurant as well as a B&B. Of course Clementine also closed, and its successors have not compared.
If you’re interested, check out this link regarding the research facility. $50m for biopharma
Also, I’m genuinely interested in why you believe First Solar won’t manufacture as planned. I’ve heard that from others as well.

I’ve driven by this several times and no local has ever been able to convey what goes on there as succinctly.
I’ve only been visiting NI for the past 20 years or so, so my views aren’t based on a lot of data. New Iberia has some unique tourist draws like Tabasco, the Shadows, Konriko, etc. but otherwise seems like a Cajun Bogalusa. There are too many successful places, like Lafayette, in close proximity so it will never go full Bogalusa, though. The older folks blame changing demographics for why the town is not what it was when they were growing up while at the same time looking down on Lafayette for encouraging economic growth and progress.
This is more of a south Louisiana anecdote than specifically about New Iberia…A few months ago, I began a financial transaction at a bank in New Iberia. We got to a certain point in the process and needed a specific bank employee to complete the transaction; however, he was not working that day. I traveled home because they said we could conclude the process when he was back the next day. I had to call the bank several times over the next few days but the employee was never in. One of the lady’s I spoke to said he has been unavailable because he was prepping for the bank’s participation in the Gumbo Cookoff. I’m not judging the priorities but the story demonstrates the mindset of many in south Louisiana.

For those who live or work there, what are the building by Westgate?
Although I’m not from the berry, both my wife and I work there. Our kids go to CHNI, and we’ve thought of moving there from Broussard out of convenience. Both our parents live in Franklin and are elderly. But what stops us is that there isn’t anything else worth moving for. Bojangles is about the only good restaurant there. The downtown looks better but the whole town is dreary. And all the real estate is priced like it’s Youngsville or Broussard.

You from New Iberia? If you are, you sure dont know much about your town or even how to google.
NIRC recently received a $50mm investment from the state. Easily found from google....The University of Louisiana at Lafayette and Iberia Parish officials announced the expansion of the University’s New Iberia Research Center and the construction of the Iberia BioInnovation Accelerator in the Progress Point Business Park on Tuesday, Aug. 30.
Both projects are the result of a nearly $50 million investment of state capital outlay funds brought to Acadiana by its legislative leaders.
Nearly $25 million will lead to the creation of a Level 3 biosafety lab at NIRC – the nation’s largest non-human primate center – that will enable advanced on-site research with infectious diseases. More than $22 million will go toward the development of a BioInnovation Accelerator drug manufacturing facility at Progress Point.
A Level 3 biosafety lab at NIRC will have global implications on infectious diseases.
Another google search....Delta Biofuel has announced a $100 million final investment decision for the construction and start up of a full-scale renewable fuel production facility in Iberia Parish that will convert sugarcane waste into feedstock for low-emissions energy generation.
Le Rosier used to be a great place to eat and drink. Actor Dan Ackroyd used to fly into New Orleans with a group, rent Harleys, ride over to Le Rosier, eat and then head back to NO. My HS classmate and good friend was the owner/chef. Old Clementines is now Amalfi Steakhouse which is owned by NI Italian restaurant Titos owner. In the same block of Clementines is Bogangles Sushi, Bambinos high end sports bar and coming restaurant Lizzies.
How often do you hang out in the West End? I dont live there so it doesnt affect me. You call one fight during the Christmas parade "spilling over into downtown"?
I could care less about Youngsville being under sea level but out of curiosity, again I did a simple google and its 26 feet ABOVE sea level.
If you live, here maybe you should move the phuk out.

Youngsville under sea level? WTF
Guaranteed that biofuels deal is going to have over grown grass for n it in five years.
It is in the same exact location as the previous one that rotted away. Also the board manufacturing facility at the other sugar mill. Those are schemes by our government that never produce anything. A way for connected people to siphon off money from the people.
Same thing happened in Laccasine.
