Killing good limits in southern Illinois until it froze up Wednesday. I figured they were all headed south

Not sure how old you are, but if you missed the 70s-80s you would not believe what it was like.
It was a whole different experience than what you see now. Flight birds during weather like this could be seen anywhere in south LA including middle of Baton Rouge. I feel sorry for the duck hunters of today. I really do.
Well I missed the 40 years part - so I know you saw the 80s at least lol
Good luck hope it changes

It was amazing...and no one shot ,much less kept, spoonbill or scaup. Now that plus a few teal is good limit of ducks. It's sad how far it's fallen

Yup, 40 years ago I saw ducks on sloughs (Tensas) that one three shot volley and you had way more than the limit. I also met Joe Alevarious (spelling).

A metric frick ton showed up in TX panhandle last Saturday. They aren’t going to leave ample grain to go eat salvinia and coontail. Couldn’t go today due to the snow on roads. Interested to see if they moved out with the 8” of snow on the ground.

Tensas

Would walk outside at night and listen to where the ducks were to decide which hole to hunt the next morning.

It was pretty special.

Grew up hunting Venice in the early mid 80s when it was a 3 duck limit and it got so bad that my grandpa quit hunting ducks and joined a deer lease in Alabama.
90s to Katrina when it rebounded was phenomenal.
One xmas eve 99 2000ish me and my cousin hunted a day kind of like today where the front pushed through. As we were heading out ducks taking off the bank we’re almost hitting us in the boat. I started putting out decoys and ducks were landing in them. I told my cousin it was gonna be a special day we would remember forever and I was only shooting drakes. I proceeded to kill six different species of drakes in a matter of less than an hour and could have limited out in 5 mins. We sat there and worked birds for a half hour or more just not wanting it to end.
We would pull up to the rocks in the river and peek over and jump shoot limits of widgeons.
You could drive down tidewater road and shoot a limit out of a truck.
Man I’m getting old

I hunted the day the freeze of 83 came through, was absolutely insane the birds before the front. Had to come in because temps dropped so damn fast, put more clothes on and headed back out. We went back the next day and trailer tires rolled out on the ice, the only thing open around BR was the river and it was loaded.

I quit duck hunting in the early 2000’s. It’ll never be what it was in the late 80’s and all through the 90’s. Best duck hunting on the planet. Once DU started putting their stamp on shite and all this other BS to go along with it happened. Duck hunting went to shite and just wasn’t fun anymore. To many damn people only out there to put face paint on their faces and see who has the best and coolest gear. I can still go hit the beaver pond at the farm off the creek and hammer the shite out of them a couple of times a year. I don’t have to worry about the hassle or dealing with all the other BS. The fun is gone. Just go with my 2 sons, brother, and dad a couple times on the farm. Great times with us together, but nothing how it used to be.
