A Question for Wine Experts...Will extreme cold during shipping affect wine?

I bought a 1/2 case of wine from an online retailer in the US and had it shipped to my home. When it was delivered by FedEx, the outside temp was 40 degrees. I opened the package and pulled the wine out immediately. As expecte3d, the bottles were ice cold. Also, it is possible that the wine was subjected to freezing temps during shipping. Will that ruin or degrade the wine? Googling that question returns conflicting information. Thanks.

As a general rule, heat is a far bigger concern for wine than is cold... until you get to freezing. Freezing wine also, understandably, fricks it up. With that said, normally if wine freezes in any substantial way, the bottle doesn't survive.
In short, as long as it didn't freeze, it's fine. I would just open and drink one soon to make sure there isn't anything obviously off with it.

100% concur with this. Perfect answer

I guess it depends on what conditions it is actually exposed to. I have never worried about shipping wine during the winter. If they're using a company like FedEx or UPS, I would assume that the wine would be boxed and spend most of its time in a warehouse, plane or truck during transit. So even if it is very cold outside, you should be ok.
What would happen if the box sat on your doorstep for an extended time in sub zero temps? I don't know. I don't know what it would take to freeze a bottle of wine. I have shipped lots of wine during the winter months and have never given it a thought.

40 is not extreme cold
40°F is to wine like 45°F is to water.
So you’ll be OK.
