I follow all of the waterfowl topics recently, and only chime in at certain times. Although I duck and goose hunt very little nowadays, I have done way more than my fair share in the past. I am still very much involved in managing a large amount of land for waterfowl. My question is, what would be thee pros and cons in having a tagging system for ducks? In other words when you buy a license, you are issued X amount of tags for the season and open a state wide season that runs from November 1 to January 31. But once you fill your tags, you are done. I am not saying that I am advocating for this, but curious to everyone’s response

I could likely live with it as I’m more of a weekend hunter than every day. I do think it would be surprising how low the number would be. Current limits essentially try to achieve just that result ( a total harvest number ) while maximizing opportunity, so it takes into account that most hunters hunt only a few days and that most hunters fail to get a limit most days.

Your system would be a more direct way to achieve that

If people would actually do it and/or we had the resources to patrol it, I'd like it.

I’m no expert, but I think the main argument would be that it’s additional hassle/cost for agencies and it’s unnecessary.

Also, having the season run straight through from 11/1-1/31 will give birds less of an opportunity to rest.

Not to mention, you’re not going to have 100% participation in the tagging system.

Lets be honest here. One week between the splits isn't exactly letting them rest either.

Agree it would be more of a hassle for the agencies, waterfowl, migratory by nature, are not large nomads like deer that you can "tag out"

Any more tags I’ll have to hire a damned book keeper.

Isn't there already an overall possession limit? like you can only have so many in your freezer?

Would severely limit the interest of those who keep bird numbers up UNLESS there was basically a 6 bird limit of tags for every day of the season. Most folks never see more than a couple of limits a season but folks who invest piles of cash into places where they can add water to gran and keep it open all season ain't interested in 4 limits or so a season they are all about everybody who pays them to hunt their place limiting out every day, whatever that means.....its those people who keep a huntable population of ducks and geese viable...if it were up to the feds and the states we'd be tossed in jail for looking crosseyed at one of the damned things but the commercial clubs are connected and keep numbers up and provide the illusion that the rest of us can also hunt ducks and geese.

Interested in what people think is a reasonable number of tags to be issued.

Likely against tags because it would curtail my days in the field. Average 50 days per year between Teal and Big Duck as recreational hunter.

Well it’s actually two weeks, but I think that’s the basis for having it. I could be wrong.

It would have to be instigated by the feds and different for each flyway. I’d be for a reduction in limits before a tagging system. That seems like it would be an admin/enforcement nightmare for LDWF

Possession limit is 18 ducks. I’m not entirely sure how it works once it hits your freezer, because you can take identifiers (wing or head) off of them when you get to the house, so as that point is it ok just to pack meat in the freezer or does it still count towards your possession limit?

Although, I’m sure if you’re at the point where a game warden would be writing a citation for what’s in your freezer, they’ve already got you on something big and they’re just trying to hit you with everything they can.

Yes, you’re legally only allowed to have 3 days limit in your possession at any given time.

Its one thing at a hunting camp to have your cooler or freezer checked, but if green jeans is checking the freezer at your house then you’ve already got bigger problems beyond having a few extra ducks in the freezer

I thought they’re still supposed to be labeled. I always write the date and species on the vac seal bags when I’m putting them in the freezer

Evidently, that is correct…

This, there is a way bigger issue going on if Greenjeans is checking the freeer at your house.
