Jackie Chan is in final negotiations to join the Columbia Pictures remake of "The Karate Kid."
Harald Zwart will helm the pic, which has been revamped as a starring vehicle for Jaden Smith.
Set in an exotic Asian locale, the new film will borrow elements of the original plot, wherein a bullied youth (Smith) learns to stand up for himself with the help of an eccentric mentor (Chan). Chris Murphy penned the screenplay.
"Karate Kid" will shoot early this summer in Beijing.
Jerry Weintraub, who launched the original 1984 pic, is producing alongside Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter, Will Smith and Ken Stovitz. China Film Group Corp. will co-produce in China.
So a Chinaman is going to play a Jap who mentors a black kid? Sounds quite diverse!

I actually love Jackie Chan's movies.. but this role does not suit him whatsoever.. unless they plan to make a comedy out of it.. which would then take away from the movie..
This doesn't work IMO..

How are they gonna fit Chris Tucker into this?

Someone needs to explain to Will Smith that we could give two shits about his fricking kid.

+1. mr. miyagi is a character that cannot and should not be played by anyone but pat morita. now that he's no longer with us, it should be left alone.
same thing as someone other than arnould doing the terminator. it's just not right

I thought the same thing. I'm sure there will be some very offended Japanese people. The only thing worse to Japanman would be if a Korean or Vietnamese person played Mr. M.

I know that the Japanese movie-going public was outraged when that Chinese actress was cast as the lead in Memoirs of a Geisha. They take their racism very seriously in Asia. I think the American way is better - just refuse to learn the difference. Just call 'em all "Chinese".

the original 1984 pic,
Maybe it's because it just doesn't seem like 25 years since it came out, but it feels way too soon to remake this one.

Even though it has been 25 years, that's not that long, it's not out of people's awareness. I don't agree with this either.
