Would somebody please accurately quantify the HB1 numbers?

I keep seeing in thread after thread the claim that Indians have completely taken over tech jobs in the US.

Then I see HB1 is only like 85K granted per year AND there's a limit on India of like 3K/year.

It does not seem like both of these things can be true at once. Does anyone here have the actual data that can set a real denominator? TIA

Immigration will always be a thing. No clue why republicans are fighting over this. Pick your battle on immigration. I would focus on the useless masses coming over the border illegally and undocumented.

They're not. The "limit" is like the government debt ceiling. Doesn't really exist.

It's been exceeded, sometimes by a lot, for decades.

~650k the past 4 years with another 135k on the way in 2025.

Some people think we need to double that.

From the google machine -

H-1B visa holders
Indians are the largest group of H-1B visa holders in the US, accounting for 72% of all H-1B visas approved in 2023.

H-1B visa admissions
In 2023, 755,020 people were admitted to the US in H-1B status.

How many years of this would be necessary before this is a lot?

It's definitely not a bigger problem than illegal immigration, but it is still something that needs adjusting.

What is the functional difference between an illegal immigrant or an H1B immigrant getting a job instead of an American worker?

This stat is flawed because current administration allows illegals to cross the border and apply for H1B status. Those people are not taking tech jobs.

No they weren't. The overwhelming number of those are 1 year extensions.

New visas are a lottery capped at 85k.

Well, think about the big number. The US is now at a record level for foreign born residents at something around 15%, and that's probably undercounting illegals.

Is that a lot?

They are temporary, brainiac. There are about 600-650k H1b's in the US, give or take, and that number is mostly steady except for the pandemic years.

It's not flawed. It's a stat. If it's accurate, it's accurate. You can argue it should be considered in the context you gave, but my counterpoint would be so what? Do you think this is the one time fedgov has done a little frickery and used a program that's supposed to have limitations as if it doesn't?

Hell, H1B is not supposed to be granted when it's a money-saving thing, and clearly that's the majority of H1Bs granted so anyone arguing caps and limitations needs a reality check.

The same people who refuse to believe the government's numbers in terms of illegal border crossings and number of illegals in the US also totally 100% believe the 85,000 H1B number

I personally know H1B visa holders who never left. Nothing is temporary when the government won't deport, and we will definitely be back to that type of government at some point.

Highest in recorded history.

Even higher than the late 1800s after mass migrations from Europe with a much smaller population base.
