My superduty is getting old and tired. Been having to put money into it every 3-4 months it seems. Been a great truck for 13 years and 225,000 miles. Looking at the ram diesel as they are a good bit cheaper than the new fords. Any of you have any cons to share? Never owned a ram truck.

I have a ram 2500 with the 6.4 hemi as I did not want to deal with the emission controls all all diesel trucks. 6.4 is a beast and tow my 5th wheel no problems.

I hear that with the emissions controls. my 2012 250 had many problems before it was deleted. Looking at a 2024 tradesman 4x4 diesel. Was gonna go gas this time around and still may but seems the price difference isn’t much on some of these 2024 discounted rams

I have a 21 RAM 2500 diesel laramie. Really like it actually. The only issue you see on these is that the heater grid bolt can drop into the number 6 cylinder. There is a aftermarket solution from Banks that replaces the grid heater. It's $1,000 for replacing the grid heater.

Other than that, the truck is solid and powerful. I pulled a 38' bumper pull RV and it pulled it pretty easy.

The Chevy/GMC Duramax will have the best transmission. The Ram Cummins is a solid engine but expect the transmission to not hold up over time.
The Ford trannies are shite now days.

My condolences to your bank account.

If you're set on a diesel I think chevrolet has the best offering right now. The drive trains are proving to be reliable and can be had for a reasonable price.

If I had to get a ram, I'd get a 1 ton with the aisin transmission. The 68rfe is alright but the aisin is a true medium duty transmission and is indestructible as long as you don't turn the engine up.

Ford's offerings right now are good but as you said, very high priced.

Just gun shy with Chevy after a bad experience with a 2008 2500 diesel z71
Bastard fell apart in the first 4 years so I traded it in the current 2012 ford I own.
Probably don’t need the diesel but if the price is right I’ll take it. I haven’t owned a gasoline truck since 2008. Need the 3/4 -1 ton though between my equipment trailer and travel trailer.

Only 225k miles? That's sad my 5.3 gasser has 265k and still going strong.

Engine still going pretty strong but in the last year and a half I have dumped over $5k into to.

New wheel bearings up front
Brakes at all four corners including calipers
New water pump
Serpentine belt
Starter
Batteries

Now this past week it blew something coolant related and leaked coolant all over the drive way. Still need to track it down. And see if I can fix it or need to tow to a mechanic shop.

If you really want a RAM contact Dave Smith Motors in Kellog ID. They will save you thousands, plus buy you a one-way airline ticket. They'll fly you in, you sign papers and drive your truck home. They are the largest RAM dealer in the world.

The 2025 comes with a new transmission. ZF Powerline 8 speed

ZF Powerline

You dont want the 68RFE transmission in the 2024 and prior models.

I recently purchased a new to me 2020 gmc 2500 diesel.

So far so good, I’ve put close to 20k pretty hard miles on it. It now has 40k on it so we will see as time keeps on. But I like it a lot so far, it pulls my goose trailer better than my 7.3 excursion did and rides exceptionally better.

You must be very rough on vehicles.
I still own essentially the same 2008 chev diesel with maintenance type things done to keep it going but nothing major.

3 years ago I had to make the same decision. I bought a 2021 Ram 3500 dually. I absolutely love it, I have 129k on it now. Easy to do my own maintenance (fuel filters, oil and crankcase filter). Only draw back, but I knew this going in is the front end. With the solid axle, they can not perform a true front end alignment and Rams have a propensity to wear through front tires quickly. After trying an aftermarket alignment trick which worked somewhat, but not great, I am going to install adjustable ball joints here in the next month. I would purchase a Ram again.

My only real issues with RAM are the stupid front axle disconnect and that they pressed Cummins to build them a hydraulic lifter CP4 engine in the name of noise. The 2016-2018 cummins engines are 750k miles engines and the hydraulic lifter are more like 350k engines. Not that any of that matters to many people, but those solid lifter 6.7's are BY FAR the best diesel engine ever put in a pickup truck.

The "fuel pump updates" with the 2025 engine gives me pause. Anything other than a CP3 pump is the wrong answer.

Have a 2024 Ram 2500 Cummins. No complaints so far but it only has about 6500 miles. Had a Duramax befor that with over 200k mikes. As stated, the trans. Is supposedly a weak point but the engine is solid ! As far as all the emissions are concerned, you’re going to have that on any of the new diesels. The only complaint so is that the Ram steering is very sensitive to road crown . When driving, on a road with a heavy road crown, it constantly pulls slightly to the right. I’ve taken it in to the dealer twice to check alignment and both times, it been right on. Looking for solutions to this.

I drove a friends GMC 2500 Denali 4x4 through Dallas and New Mexico. I wanted to trade in my Sierra when I got home! Unreal how comfortable it was.

I am just starting the process of getting a 2500 series truck. My wife wants a 5th wheel so I am having to upgrade my GMC. I do have an old F250, an old work truck that my wife refuses to ride in

I am not looking forward to this process
