We nearly fought at Christmas dinner over whether a truck driver is a professional

By professional I mean like a school teacher, doctor, lawyer, accountant, plant operator, etc.
My cousin Big Marlon says he’s a professional because that’s what the truck driving school said. He holds himself out as a professional truck driver and thinks he’s entitled to professional courtesies. I just don’t consider truck driving to be a professional occupation. What do you think?

What professional courtesies is he seeking?

I remember my pop tell me how difficult those jobs were whenever I was a kid and how much he tried to stay courteous to them on the road and while they were working. Then I grew up and realized how many are meth’ed up and complete aholes who will be jerks on the road just because they’re bigger than everybody else.

Go ask a doctor or lawyer to back up a trailer. You will be thoroughly amused

Maybe not but don’t think it’s an either or situation.

Other than frequent flyer discounts from lot lizards I can't think of any

Let me settle your dispute. A truck driver is not a professional.

Professional courtesies like signing his emails with Joe Blow, CDL?

One question:
DOES HE HAVE BUSINESS CARDS?

Does Big Marlon know that he makes diesel if he drives his big rig over 100MPH? If so, he's at the top of the professional GDCK chart.

It's professional in the sense it takes specialized training and skills.
Definitely not a glamorous profession. But definitely a necessary one.
Bit of a mixed bag

I mean anything you earn money doing could be considered a profession
Like I am a professional hair model
I've been paid for my brain and my looks
albeit not much ,, but still

Yes it is. I retired after 44 years in that profession. It's a tough job that takes a special type person to endure. There are a holes in every profession.
