Gun.deals

6.5 Grendel is also another good option for light recoil.

What’s the biggest differences (benefits) to either the 243 or the 6.5?

350 legend should be in the mix for light recoil as well.

Tikka on Buds or Cheaper Than Dirt, or gunbroker.com

Not getting in the caliber argument but that's where deals are regardless

Recoil is better with the 6.5 Grendel, although, the .243 will have a flatter trajectory at long ranges. 6.5 Grendel is more readily available in an AR platform, which can usually be easily adjustable for a youth. I think they’re both good options, but bullet selection is important.

If you haven’t picked out a rifle, the ruger American line is affordable and accurate. They’re not fancy, but they’re cheap and they work. They offer a compact in .243 also.

I recommended gun.deals because once you know what you’re looking for, you can compare prices. I used to buy from budsgunshop all the time but they’re usually nowhere close to the cheapest theses days.

Only recommendation is to get 1:8 twist, that will allow your kid to shoot the heavier bullets coming out for the 6mm creed in the 243. They’ll be pumped with whatever you get them, getting a gun as a gift is such a strong memory.

Used, if you have time to shop. Gunbroker, cabelas, pawn shops, etc. There's a lot of rip offs out there but good deals still pop up. I bought my last one off gun broker and I might never buy a brand new gun again.

“Best deal” is only going to save you $50 or so. Find the rifle you want and buy it. If it’s a Christmas present, you’ve cut it a bit tight. If not, just wait until the season ends and take your time finding the deal you seek.

I’ve spent a ton on Gunbroker, and there are deals to be had, but by the time I have to pay tax, shipping, and the transfer fee… it’s not always as sweet of a deal. Louisiana sportsman classifieds is nice but usually doesn’t have the rarer stuff I’m looking for.

Agreed. Its easy to surpass the cost of new with all the extra costs, and not many people are out there selling their most accurate most awesome rifle for a steal. For every deal there's 150 ripoffs.

24hourcampfire is another site that has a good classified section. You can find all sorts of guns, scopes, ammo, etc for sale.

Practically no difference in performance of the cartridge on deer within 200 yards.

243 has very slightly more recoil and is flatter shooting. Advantage 243 if using to hunt prairie dogs or coyotes at 200++ yards.

Grendel has slightly less recoil, even less if used in a semi auto (the gas to operate the bolt uses some of the recoil energy). In a semi auto, follow up shots will be easier and faster. Advantage Grendel if you want to shoot it out of an AR-15 and if your deer rifle also doubles as a hog eliminator. Also with an AR-15 you can use a collapsible stock so one minute your 8 year old can shoot it and then you can move the stock back to your position and you can take the follow up shot.

This is why my kid will be starting with one. Stick a supressor on an AR15 and you've got a very light, very compact, very kid-friendly rifle.

Just single-load it so they don't go jihad on the woods

By the time my kid was 9, I was giving him 10-round mags.

Another vote for the 6.5 grendel in an AR.

What my son started with (actually a 6.8 spc) but very close. Later built a 6.5 grendel

ETA: please do your son a favor and look into buying a silencer. My kids have never shot a rifle without one and I don’t intend for them to ever do it.

That's what I was going to say. Cabela's and BassPro usually have a Christmas sale for those, and is a decent starter gun.

The fact that I can't get one in a wrapped right next to the gummy worms in the checkout line at cabelas is criminal.

I'm getting one soon. Its plain stupid to shoot guns without one. No upside at all. If the length bothers you, cut the barrel by however long the supressor is.
