He was truly ahead of his time. By about 20 years.

Side note….slick arse Bobby Bowden. Wouldn’t suspend janikoswi in title game cause he had different rules for “foreign players” hahahaha. Legend

It was absurd for a 28 yo to play college sports back then and it's absurd now with these 7, 8, 9 yr players.

Not important, but obviously broke my VT heart in the 99 Sugar Bowl.

I sucked but played at VT and was barely older than him and I had last played 7 years before...it was wild seeing someone my age out there in the Bowl game

It is wild seeing these 7 or 8 year players now. It used to be a miracle to see a 6th year player.

There is this great story out there about Janikowski and the first time (might have been the second! who knows) he won the Lou Groza award. The legend goes the ceremony folks were worried he wouldnt show up on time so they sent someone to get him to make sure he would.

The guy pulls up to Janikowski's hotel room. He's in a button down dress shirt like you wear to the club, track pants, flip flops, and is a holding a big plastic cup of straight vodka on the rocks. Dude is hammered. "We go now?" "You cant go to this show dressed like that! You have to change" he grumbles a bit but finds pants and a jacket and off they go. He was about to win the Heisman for kickers and the dude just thought it was another party at FSU. Legend indeed.

I remember Torrance Marshall not being happy about it.
