Traveling with a group - Passenger Van question

Hey everyone,
I will be going with a youth group in January to a conference. We will have between 13-16 people. I have never organized transportation for this many people. What is your suggestion? 2 Vehicles and split the group? I know AVIS is showing a 12 person van, so was debating that to hold people and luggage as well as a Van/Suv to hold the rest of the kids.
Or do you know if companies out there rents out 18 person vans/mini buses? One of the dad's has a license to drive a bus and drives our current one at church.

Make sure the tires are in good shape and properly inflated. Lots of tragic accidents in vehicles like that due to tire failure.

Church bus/van crash stories are often in the news. There was a bad/fatal one with a group from Shreveport a few years ago. I suspect volunteer drivers and worn out tires often play a role.
If a can is listed as 12 passenger, I'd bet that's 12 skinny people jammed in with no luggage. Listings for gun safes, vacation homes, etc. always wildly overestimate capacity.

Honestly, I'd put everyone on a Megabus or a Greyhound and get a couple of Uber XLs for the final mile.
Think of how great most women and teens are at driving high center of gravity SUVs, and then make it worse with greater susceptibility to cross winds, etc.

So its safe to say we should split the group and do 2 vehicles then? it's 13 people total.

Yes, and make common sense decisions that make sense for any long drives with multiple people:
- map out a route
- set an itinerary with estimated departure and arrival times
- plan a reasonable amount of stops
- determine drivers for each vehicle ahead of time, and if driving overnight, set a rotation of drivers based around stops
- thoroughly inspect vehicles before leaving rental company, including the tires
- share plans with other parents
Hope yall have a safe trip!

I should have clarified, we are flying there, but need transportation around town and then to the conference about 45 miles away. So it won't be too long distance.

I tried to rent a van once at the airport in houston. Iah. Reserved it in advance. Forgot which rental agency. But when I went to get it, they didn't have one. Put me in a bind. So, make sure they can deliver.

The 12 passenger vans are 4 rows, each with three people in them. Unless you want everybody real close with their friends and neighbors, it's probably a good idea to split up. This way people can stretch out and maybe catch some sleep without slobbering on each others shoulders.
Also consider three minivans, much easier to drive and fit into parking spots when you arrive.
