My 5 year old Corgi dog has epilepsy

About 2 years ago our Corgi was lying on the floor and started having a full body seizure and foaming at the mouth. My wife and I honestly thought he ate something poisonous. Neither of us had ever seen or knew dogs with seizures.
We took him to the vet and got him on meds to slow down the seizures. Every 6 months or so he’d have 1 or 2 breakthrough seizures, we’d up his meds or add a new one.
The most recent go round, he went almost 5 months without a seizure then all hell broke loose last Wednesday evening. Between Wednesday and Monday afternoon he had 18 focal seizures and at least 5 full body. We took him to the Vet Friday and then again on Monday. They were finally able to slow the attacks to 1 focal a day.
It sucks watching your pet go through epilepsy and not being able to do much about it other than comfort them while it’s happening.

Dealing with that now with our 6 yr old corgi. We had no idea that corgi's had a predisposition to seizures but from what I've read it's not uncommon.

Neither did we. He’s on Phenobarbital and Keppra for the seizures and an occasional gabapentin for after the seizures. We can’t figure out what triggers his.

We had a dachshund and a chihuahua that had it, but only seldom. It is scary to witness. I hope your pup can get some relief.

My 5 year old golden retriever had it. Unfortunately after one of his breakthrough seizures he had some brain damage.
Was tough to see him go through that and unfortunately had to put him down because his quality of life was extremely bad.
Wish your pup the best in dealing with this.

I just put my 8 year old mutt down because her seizures made her aggressive and unpredictable. I’m sorry you’re having to deal with this.

Very sad to see them have seizures. My mom's Frenchie had them. It ended up pretty much draining him and was what did him in in the end. Sorry yours is having them, hopefully they can get them under control.
I've actually had grand mal seizures since I was 19 (over a year since my last one though
) and me and my moms dog were on the same three medicines
Not funny but funny.
My family would always be crying and my brother would have panic attacks after my seizures. I'd just be going abut my day and then wake up in n ambulance. So many things suck about them but it wasn't until I saw my mom's dog have them that I realized how hard it is on those that have to watch. It's not fun seeing someone you love almost die.
Dogs are tough though and sometimes they age out of them, hopefully that's the case with your good girl/boy. You can always keep tweaking the meds until you come up with a concoction that works better.

I feel your pain brother. Our black Lab started with seizures a year and a half ago. Full-on, total body gran mal seizures.
He's on meds and takes CBD chews (from ElleVet). Has only had one seizure in the last ten months.
I nearly lost a couple of fingers the first time I witnessed it. I was home by myself and he had one. When I thought it was over, I knelt down to comfort him. I was completely ignorant of the post-ictal stage, and he grabbed my left hand and clamped down. Luckily, he couldn't bite through my wedding band.
Still, one of his teeth went into the underside of my middle finger and literally ripped the meat off the bone. When he finally let go, I retreated and didn't dare take a look at my hand for a few minutes.
He just maneuvered himself into the entrance of the hallway leading to both bathrooms. He was foaming at the mouth and growling, so I gave him lots of space.
Hand hurt like a mofo, and I was bleeding like I'd had a table saw accident. Got him to the vet and me to ER. Took about three weeks for my hand to heal enough for me to start using it again. All good today, but I thought for sure I'd be maimed for life.
Since the meds and CBD, his seizures are far less often and much shorter in duration. Sadly, we have no idea what triggers them.
I hope your little buddy gets the treatment it needs.

I was just researching CBD last night but didn’t really know which was best. Is there a specific chew you buy? Also, where do you get them?
We’ve been lucky in the fact that he’s not aggressive when he comes out of the seizures. He’s dazed and confused, understandably. But he’s never growled at or bitten us.

Just curious.. why didn't you come on TigerDroppings and start a thread about it?

ElleVet is a great source for CBD and you can buy directly from their website.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but look at cleaning up his diet (grain free/whole food) and avoiding/eliminating unnecessary vaccines.

I am sorry y'all are going through this. I'll be saying prayers for that sweet boy!

We have to get some expensive foot because one of our Frenchie's has stomach issues but one of the things that originally caused his stomach issues was the grain free food.
My vet told us grain free was basically a way for dog food companies to start charging more just because that sounds better but it's actually detrimental to most dogs and that most of them need grains.

Sorry to hear about that. I had a corgi growing up. She was sleeping and I went to put her and it triggered a seizure that she never recovered from. It was like she was in a permanent daze. I always felt like it was my fault for startling her.
She was the only small dog I've ever had. She was so sturdy for a small dog and had the temperament of a big friendly dog

His vet says he likely goes blind and deaf during the seizures, so he's very confused when he comes out of the grand mal. That's why he is very defensive at first.
She says his hearing comes back first, so he tracks every sound until his vision is restored. That has taken as much as 45 minutes, but was only about 10 for his last seizure.
As for the CBD chews, consult your vet first. Ours said she can't "recommend" CBD, but knows some of her clients give it to their dogs. WINK, WINK.
We get ours from ElleVet. You can find them online. Call the toll free numbernif your vet has no objections. They are very thorough and helpful, but I will caution you. CBD is expensive.
I really hope your little guy gets some long-term relief. It's unnerving as hell to watch your dog go through the full-on seizures. Godspeed.
