Plea to Woodward and Ausberry to end the Schedule Conundrum

Apologies for the long-winded post, but we REALLY need to reach out to Woodward and Ausberry to stop the madness of starting against difficult opponents. I realize this has been spoken about ad nauseum, but I want to show the results of the rankings to prove my point:
LSU beat Ole Miss and SCAR head-to head and finished with an 8-4 record. LSU finished unranked in the playoff rankings and behind teams like ULL and Tulane in the AP/Coaches Poll. Now, let's pretend we did not play that USC game and scheduled an opponent like Western Kentucky instead (I realize that we should have beaten USC, and Kelly absolutely needs to do a better job of getting the team ready to play opening games like Les did during his tenure. But even so, let's continue this exercise). If LSU plays Westen Kentucky, they finish the season 9-3 with head-to head wins over Ole Miss and SCAR and 5-3 in the SEC with a non-conf win over UCLA. With a brand and SOS similar to LSU's, what ranking do you think LSU gets? I would say certainly over teams like BYU, Mizzou, UNLV, Illinois, Syracuse, Colorado, Army, and Memphis. Therefore, we would finish ranked 17th worst case scenario and you could make the argument that we would finish 13th over Ole Miss and SCAR due to the head-to head victory component.
Now let's pretend LSU played USC and had beaten them finishing 9-3 with the same record against everyone else. What ranking does LSU get? I'd argue the EXACT same had we not even played them. 17th would be the floor and 13th would be the ceiling. You may say that does not matter we had our chances to win vs Florida and A&M and blew it and you'd be correct. I realize 13th would still not be good enough for the playoffs. However, this experiment is to show how much rankings hinge on record over quality wins. At the end of the day, the committee will use whatever reasoning they want to let a team in (just as they did both years with Bama, particularly last year with Bama over FSU)but WHY SHOULD WE CONTINUE TO MAKE IT HARDER FOR OURSLEVES TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS.
Let's take last year as anther example. If LSU played Colorado instead of FSU, they would have finished 10-2. If the playoffs were the same format as this year, LSU would NOT have made it last year at 9-3. They WOULD have made it at 10-2. Again why take ourselves out of it. I understand wanting excting games to open the season, but until this thing ends up in an NFL style format, why give ourselves a disadvantage when we already play in the grueling SEC. I can already see a scenario unfolding next year where LSU finishes 9-3 with a road loss to Clemson and is left out of the playoffs behind a team like Missouri that we would clearly be favored over but have an extra loss due to schedule discrepancies. This needs to stop until the sport is transitioned to a better format.

Maybe it’s about making money & not a playoff resume
ETA: everyone is heading to a revenue sharing model, right?

Woodward did not make us choke against USC. Don't shy away from these games. If we beat either Florida or A&M like we should have, we'd be heading to the SEC Championship and could have still made the playoffs even with the USC loss. Gotta win in conference. That's all that matters.

You obviously did not read the post.

Verge has that old school mentality of "If we don't win our games we don't deserve to be there!"
I get having big games but there is a happy medium. Why are we playing at Clemson next year? Why don't we play a team like Virginia or TCU instead? Seems like that is the approach that Bama and Tennessee are taking

I agree with all of this. It's broken right now and until they come out with some very specific guidelines as to how they are ranking teams we should not be scheduling difficult OOC games

I say frick these neutral site games. I like playing a good OOC team but do home and away.

I remember a time when we used to bitch and gripe about starting the season off with a cupcake. The long and short of it no one ever complained about these games and always spoke about how important they were for recruiting and exposure until the team and coaches started choking in them.

I think the SEC mandates that you play one P5 out of conference game every year. And USC was really crappy. LSU has know one to blame but themselves.
Maybe in the future, play it the 2nd or 3rd game of the season because Kelly has proven he can’t get LSU ready to play a season opener

I agree & while you're at it do away w/ the bye week bf Bama, it is too long of a time. That would be a good week for one of our cupcakes.

OP is saying that you are penalized if you lose that game, but you aren't rewarded if you win.

I’m going to pretend I didn’t start reading all that.

Ausberry will beat his chest and say LSU doesn’t back down to nobody before LSU gets skull dragged infront of a packed Clemson Death Valley next Fall on national television and our brand takes another kick to the balls. No one in charge at LSU has any self awareness. When LSU was a consistent contender, sure let’s schedule tough season openers. But it’s completely idiotic at this point when LSU is a mid tier SEC program.

You are right about that. It seems no one at LSU has self awareness. I would have handled these scheduling problems years & years ago.

If the true goal is to make the playoffs, you schedule anyone outside the SEC as a rent a win, period. No discussion.
Enough wins in the SEC and you are in regardless of who you played out of conference.

I get that. But again- if the team was winning these games again on a regular basis we wouldn’t have these threads multiple times a season. If big openers are a problem now and no reason to have them, they would have been, albeit smaller, a problem then too; but nobody saw them that way.

Big game home/home series are awesome
The neutral site shite needs to stop now.

the real issue is something like Florida State where they had the opportunity to play a week before and get some kinks out. Momentum and the margins bt winning and losing are so close those things matter.
We need to get smarter at scheduling. Starting with scheduling Tulane on Thanksgiving weekend.

I’m for this. It could he a fun game again and at least feel like playing a rival on rivalry weekend instead of just another misfit toy with no partner.
Do they kick The Bayou Classic out of the Dome though for when it’s Tulane’s year to host?
