Lately I started doing a full series run through of BMW. I loved watching this show with my dad when I was young so I always have a soft spot for it. There are a ton of things in it now watching as an adult that could be scrutinized or eye rolled as being totally unrealistic, but I mean it's just a TV show so who cares. However there was something from an episode yesterday that bugged me.

It's the 2-parter in season 4 when topanga finds out her family is moving to pittsburgh. Once the news drops cory is understandably torn between refusing to accept it and being really sad/upset about it. His parents are always the voice of reason and logic and act generally in the way most real life parents would. So at first they respond like you'd expect adults to- comforting corey but basically saying "this is her parent's decision, it's out of our control, we just have to learn to adjust and move on". Perfectly reasonable. So then towards the end of the episode they're having dinner and Topanga shows up at the door. (as an aside- this is one of the things I mentioned above that are totally unrealistic. It's 5 hours between the two cities and topanga didn't drive there presumably because they needed to call someone to come pick her up. But again, this isn't really the point so whatever). The parents do the rational thing and call Topanga's parents, as you'd expect. So (off screen) the parents contact topanga's aunt who lives local and she comes to the house to get topanga.

So then the odd part. On a dime the parents do a total 180 about face from everything they've done up to this point. 90% of the episode it's been "this isn't our life or decision; Topanga's parents are moving and that's the end of it. Not our business". But when the aunt arrives they tell her "this isn't right! topanga has grown up here and all her friends and family are here and she should stay here her last year of high school dammit!" So then (in again a totally unrealistic situation) the aunt calls the parents they talk for 2 minutes and it's decided that her parents are totally cool with topanga just staying in philly 5 hours away for another year and living with her aunt.

this is all great and happy bc of the outcome but I couldn' help but feel a bit annoyed by the Matthews' actions. They have ALWAYS been steady, even keel, and reasonable but in the very last minute they decided to go the opposite way .

So I've rambled on long enough here I guess. Anyone else love BMW or what?!

Yeah free form is where I'm watching on YTTV, set it to record the series.

One little footnote that I found funny was there was one episode, can't remember what season, where they had a new Harley Kiner but for 1 episode. Not talking about Adam Scott when he came in to play the bully (Griff), a guy literally called Harley Kiner supposed to be the same character. I guess they thought audeinces wouldn't notice maybe? But it was very clearly not the real Harley lol

MAYBE Alan and Amy really loved Topanga like one of their own kids and deep down they didn't agree with or want her to leave, but they had to do the right thing as parents and tell Corey what he needed to hear. But when they saw what Topanda went through to come back to see Corey they let their emotions take over and just said hell with it, we want her to stay too.

I had a long term girlfriend in high school and parents can get very attached to their kids SO. Since we couldn't drive for the first 2-3 years you spend a lot of time with the families and doing things like a part of the family. It's not out of the question that they saw Topanga like a daughter.

Fantastic show. Honestly some of the life lessons Feeny, Turner, and Alan deliver hit home watching as an adult way more than they ever did when I watched as a kid.

i agree with everything you said. it goes without saying that they loved topanga and would of course like to see her stay. But it was just strrange to see them go from a total "this isn't our decision" mindset to then meddling into another family's affairs and striaght up saying that this isn't right.

It was mentioned that they were moving because her mom got transferred (that was the extent of what the viewer is told). Maybe they tripled their salary and they were going to increase their quality of life several times over? We have no idea what the Lawrence's were in for but it's not the Matthew's place at all to argue with her parents and tell them they are in the wrong.

Also I want to know a lot more about this aunt that can apparently just take in a 17 year old to live with her on 5 minute's notice lol

Per the rewatch podcast that Topanga, Shawn and Eric do, there was an episode about this where they interviewed the dude who played Harley and, if I'm remembering the story right, he had a drinking problem and started showing up to set drunk. The director fired him right before taping that episode, which is why they had to get a quick replacement actor. They then had to write Harley out of the series while he was in rehab, which is how Griff came about.

My favorite show EVER.

As a side note, they did a good job when they made Girl Meets World. Hits all the same notes as the original but for modern kids.

You need to listen to the Pod Meets World podcast with Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel, and Ryder Strong. They do two episodes a week, the one on Monday is a guest connected to the show and they've had everyone of note from the show on excluding Ben Savage. The Thursday episode is a recap of the an episode, they've gone in order and are now up to the end of season 5. The episode recaps are awesome if you love the show, the stuff they can tell you about story lines, actors, sets, etc is fascinating. They don't hold back on things they don't like either.

They had the actor who played Harley on and he had a mental breakdown in a table read and had to get help. So they used this stand in for one episodes. They had the stand in actor on the podcast and it wan an interesting conversation. They still never understood why they didn't just write Harley out until the main actor was ok to come back.

Yep, came here to suggest the podcast. They are great together, and it is really cool to hear insights on what their life on set was like.

BMW was my favorite show growing up. I started rewatching along with the podcast. They are almost done with season 5, and the last few episodes of the podcast have been hilarious because of how stupid the show is at this point. Which I definitely didn't remember as a kid, but they make some valid points.

I don't think they really changed, as you pointed out that their stance was "it wasn't their fault". I don't think them helping facilitate Topanga staying is an opposing idea.

Do they ever address Eric’s traumatic brain injury that turned him into a barely-functioning retard?
