I believe that L-S-U was promoted extensively by Paul Manasseh, long time Sports Information Director, back in the 1960's.

why not LA State?
LSU is the designer label here, and everywhere.

I guess your school only had one way in and one way out. We had several different routes depending on floods, alligators, and angry bulls, and EACH and every way was up hill!

I can definitively answer for you that LSU is the preferred branding name of Louisiana State University.
A unique brand in any business is a very fortunate thing to have, whether it's Coke, Pepto Bismol or Styrofoam. You know what you're getting by the brand label. Now, Pepto Bismol could brand itself as "Bismuth-based Stomach Reliever with Coating Action," all the same as LSU could brand itself as "Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College at Baton Rouge."
LSU is a good brand name. It's quick, memorable, sounds good, looks good, and is unique among universities.
LSU uses its brand not just in athletics, but also academics. As a university, they REALLY don't like to use Louisiana State University outside of formal references, and they downright hate just "Louisiana State."
A LOT of thought and planning goes into branding the university. I remember no more than five years ago, the university and its colleges used more than FORTY different logos on campus to identify LSU. You just can't do that when you're trying to build a brand. You need ONE image and ONE name. That's what LSU does now.
Trust me, every time a football player says "Louisiana State" on Monday Night Football, there are marketing people at LSU who bristle over it.
You might not think it's that big a deal... but let me ask you this, what university is known as "THE" university? Now, which one is simply known as "The U?" THAT came out of using Monday Night Football as a primary weapon to advance the brand.
NFL people... please... our name is LSU. Thank you.

It can never be Louisiana State, cuz then we would have to get rid of Ellis Hugh.

Some good points. Here's another issue with names. Lots of states have directional names. But when you say just "Northwestern" you mean Ill. When you say just "Northeastern" you mean Mass. "Southwestern" used to be in Tenn but they changed the name to Rhodes.

The LSU brand name carries over into academics as well. I went to grad school at LSU and among my fellow students and profs we always refered to us and to others as LSU and other students and profs at other schools most of the time used the term LSU.

The "Louisiana State" Basketball jerseys during the Rudy Macklin era were awesome IMO
Growing up, I had one made #21..Ethan Martin was my favorite player

Because when you say "State" it usually mean the other, lesser university.
For example Oklahoma>Oklahoma State
Michigan> Michigan State
Texas> Texas State
Mississippi> Mississippi State
Florida> Florida State
By saying Louisiana State, you imply that we are a lesser college.
Also, ElleShoe just sounds awesome

And then there was the girls basketball team from Pembroke Middle School in Florida. They came on to the court with the initials on their unis and got laughed at.

It is LSU because that was what the newspapers used due to space requirements in their columnar formats that listed scores and schedules.
This makes sense. Also, if the NY Times does an article on the Tigers, they use L-S-U in the text.
