How do we get Payton and Boston on roster while avoiding the tax?

I think both these guys deserve roster spots but I also know that Payton currently is occupying one roster spot and Im assuming his deal hasnt guaranteed yet for tax purposes. I’m just curious and asking posters who are more knowledgeable about our cap and the tax, and how the pels will manage this while avoiding the tax?
The easiest way would be trading Zion or BI at deadline and taking in less money in the trade. But say they don’t do that, what are the other avenues to get there? Who likely will be traded- what will it cost? Just interested to hear how the pels work this out. Would be a shame if we lost either player during the season.

I imagine all the money we’re going to avoid paying Zion will mean we can afford 40 minimum contract guys and still be below tax =)

Simple terms, it maybe impossible.
With Payton we are at 15 contracts, we would have to make a trade shedding one contract and roughly 5 million in order to do it. Not many teams out there that kind of trade would be possible with.

I mean we could try sliding in a 3 way trade and dumping some guys but you’re right its tough. I think they will just keep Boston on 2 way and dump Payton at some point. Which would be highly disappointing.

Idk about Highly. Elfrid's been on this team before. He has his moments, but that's usually all they are

He had a NBA season high 21 assists last night. Thats more than a “moment.” Pels could use a guy like Payton with his passing talents on a cheap contract.

The math doesn't work for marginal moves unfortunately.
The Pels are currently 3.5 million over the tax. You have to have 14 players on your roster and everyone that is expendable is on minimum deals.
Dump Theis or JRE who make about $2 million
Hope Murray misses another game and loses I believe about $1.3 million in a 65 games played incentive
That gets you close but you're still not quite there.
Hawk for Kessler doesn't have the same appeal with Missi's development. Murray, Herb and Trey are not going anywhere. That leaves CJ, BI, and Zion.
This team either needs to justify the tax this year, or say good by to one of the big 3.

The path is basically the same as it was before the season: trade Hawk to Utah for Walker Kessler.
If we aren't making some big deal with Zion, BI, or CJ, then that's really the only way to do it that makes sense.
Maybe Ainge is coming to realize that Kessler isn't actually worth two 1sts. We'll see.

One game is most certainly a moment lol

Ok dude. The team plays better when hes point. Getting 21 assists in a game means you have the ability to be a decent passer. On top of that hes cheap. Move along if you have nothing productive to say.

If we do that you keep Elfrid on the roster and then convert Boston from 2 way to roster spot after the season. Im guessing thats best case scenario.

No, you're still over the tax in that scenario. You've dumped about $3.3 in that scenario and you need to dump $3.5 and there's nothing small left to throw overboard. Barely over the tax is still over the tax.

I'm not hating on the guy, I just don't see Elfrid Payton bringing long term value all of sudden at 30 years old. Short term band-aid, most definitely. I just wouldn't invest long term

It just seems like then its highly likely Pels have to make a major move at deadline like you mentioned. Will be a very interesting deadline regardless of how good or bad our team is.

I was talking about signing him for rest of season man. Not investing in him long term. Maybe a 1 and 1 deal where team option for year two.

It's hard to imagine a turnaround that makes you think this team is worthy of the tax. Which means you have to move a Hawkins or larger salary with less coming back in return.

My apologies if I misunderstood, I've pretty much given up on being competitive this season so I'm definitely looking ahead. I'm fine with keeping him for the season if that would be at all possible, but I wouldn't give up anything that could help us in the future in order to do so. If that's possible, then sure

No worries. Yeah I agree with the same. Both Boston and Elfrid have been a silver lining this season it would be nice if they got on the roster but seems like that might be difficult without a major trade.

To me its really what to do with BI. If they don’t agree to a deal, I don’t think you just let him walk after the season especially if it seems like we’re not making the play-in.
