I have heard there is a real shortage of small town attorneys. How big of an issue is this? I think it would be fun to be a small town lawyer. One of the well respected members of the community (assuming you don’t do anything scummy). I like living in small towns and it seems like one of the few jobs that it would actually be feasible to live pretty much wherever you want. Also, you could probably go to any old law school? Just don’t wind up in a ton of debt.

Is this even a thing anymore? Everyone has a phone or can do zoom/video conferencing.

Of course it is. Believe it or not there are still many many people out there who don’t do everything via screens.

It’s not Covid anymore. Courts operate in person.
They don’t just have every court session over zoom lol…

I’m not talking about court. They can meet with clients virtually or over the phone. And then if they need to make a court appearance they can drive in form the “big city” and go to court.

I think most people would rather hire a local. Or somebody from the next town over.

They would possibly charge less too.

But yes, I’m sure that happens a lot

More difficult than you think. You’ll have to know how to run and biz and keep good people. Keeping up with filing motions, discovery, all the mail, scheduling, etc. is a job in itself.

You’ll probably want to be skilled in family law, criminal defense, property, oil and gas, contracts and business law. That’s a lot of different subject matters to keep up with. Not to mention there’s probably already two or three guys doing the same within a 30 mi. Radius, so you’ll have to be better than them to keep business up.

Unless you work big law, I have never understood why one would be an attorney. Make partner in 9 years and 1 million a year, or make shite money, with the stress, and try to get any client you can...

End up doing mostly DWI defense from what I’ve seen.
Or family law which is scary.

SFP is a well respected, local attorney, and one of the brightest in Louisiana. He can give you great advice, and you'll know it comes with a 200+ IQ stamp of approval.

Go in house. You have one client, get paid $150k - $400k depending on size of company and seniority level. Less money than partner, but less work and way less stressful while still making a good living.
