Wife and I are talking about a long weekend getaway just the two of us in 2025 (no timeframe yet).

Flying from Atlanta, want to eat some good Texas BBQ and just see a few things. Trying to decide between Houston (Truth BBQ, NASA, San Jacinto, other ideas?) and Austin/San Antonio (Franklin BBQ?, Capitol, Alamo, Riverwalk, other ideas?)

Definitely AUS/SAT. For 4 days, I’d pick one or the other and day trip out from there. Both have great downtowns and a lot to offer.

Visit Greune and New Braunfels for sure. Take the back roads to get there (esp from Austin). Check out The Grist Mill (if the weather’s good). Fredericksburg is also a great day trip from either as well.

Terry Black’s is my favorite BBQ in Austin. The original Salt Lick is outside of Austin and is its own cool experience.

Austin has better BBQ; San Antonio has better Mexican/Tex-Mex.

In San Antonio, stay near the Riverwalk and keep it touristy for only 4 days (with a day trip to NB or Fredericksburg).

In Austin, pay a little extra for your hotel and stay near the river. You’ll have easy access to Congress, East Austin, and downtown. You’ll be able to stay on foot and be near great bars, sights, and eats.

Thanks for the insight. I know BBQ is a personal choice, but is Franklin's worth the wait or is it mainly just hype because of Aaron?

Also, is Texas Chili Parlor any good, or do people just go there to say they had a mad dog margarita (which I've heard are horrible)?

I love it but it's a dive bar. A mad dog marg is a marg w/ mezcal which is how I drink my margs anyway so I like it. Personally, Austin is the best choice for home base and you can daytrip to SA and maybe Fredericksburg. But I like live music and dive bars. You can also walk along Town Lake during the day on a path that basically loops the lake and will be full of people walking, jogging and biking on a nice day. You can also rent canoes/kayaks and go out on the lake. Franklins is good but yea, the wait. La Barbecue, Blacks and Leroy & Lewis are just as good and less wait although there will be a wait at La Barbecue and Leroy & Lewis. Hit Donn's Depot one night for a true old Austin 2 steppin' experince and if you are adventurous, Sam's Townpoint, which is far south Austin, is the hippest spot in Austin when Ramsay Midwod, who owns the joint, is playing psychedelic country on a Saturday night and all the hipster cowboys and girls are 2 steppin'.

I'll be doing all of the above this weekend except the barbecue.

You have until mid April, or you wait until mid October.

…and even with that, avoid SXSW (March) and ACL Fest (Oct).

ETA- July/Aug/Sept are really hot. May & June aren’t terrible.

We’re going next spring. Our business credit card is a Hyatt so a lot of times that dictates where we stay. We’re staying at the Hyatt regency hill country resort and spa. It looks awesome.

Hill Country Reaort

We’re also staying a couple nights in town at the Hyatt on the river. Really looking forward to this trip. Please post details about any places you would reccomend or avoid after your trip.

Stay in the domain area of Austin. Great shopping and breweries everywhere.

We are still in the talking/planning stages so you may beat us there, but I will certainly post a review if/when we make it.
