Has our drafting been Loomis or the HC or were they working together? Until we get someone that's better at scouting/drafting I don't think we will improve to the type of team we want to be

Jeff Ireland and his scouting department.

You can blame Loomis all you want for the dumb trades.

I didn't realize Ireland was still part of the F.O.

Even if Loomis is ultimately calling the shots on which players to draft, all decisions will be based off of information from

Only part that may fall on Loomis' head is if he's making the calls and going against Ireland and his team's recommendations. But I suspect if this was the case Ireland would have gone on to interview with one of the handful of teams that have expressed interest.

I agree. I'm not sure where the disconnect is between the people saying "We need this kind of player" and the scouting department putting together lists of possible players that meet those needs, but I'm pretty sure, or at least I hope the coaches aren't saying, "Go out and find me the players with the biggest boom to bust potential", and if you can find some that have injury histories.

I just have to feel like the majority if this falls on the evaluation process. I think the scouting department needs a big shake up because the scouting department is or should be 3-4 years ahead of the team with their evaluations. Can you imagine another 3-4 years of drafting like we have while we're trying to rebuild?

Ireland runs the Scouting department.

Khai Harley is a huge influence on roster management, that includes both pro and college personnel for free agency and the Draft.

In my opinion, these 2 are just as much to blame as Loomis himself. Loomis generally seems like retard who just flounders around listening to his "trusted advisors", while having no firm grasp of everything at hand. Kind of like Coach O was at LSU.

I was a big fan of his when he first got here... But man he has had some stinkers lately...

I think the scouting department is on par w other teams. I think Ireland has a good eye for talent. Are there misses, sure but everyone has misses.
The issue is Loomis and his hyper aggressive trades. We trade lopsided trades bc he seems a player so special or being a missing piece, that he drains our draft capital.
I would love to see two drafts were Ireland’s scouting dept had 8-9 picks in each. I bet the results would be above average.

We had that 2017 draft and then everyone outsmarted themself trying to replicate what they believe happened in that draft for the Saints.

What happened was we got incredibly lucky to have quite possibly the most successful draft in draft history. I think they thought they had some kind of magic formula but it was obviously complete luck.

I agree that the 2017 draft made them overconfident in their ability.
I think they also were convinced that they were a couple of players away from a championship ( they weren’t necessarily wrong). So, their draft strategy became trade up for the few players that you need. They missed on some of those. It left us w thin depth and lack of playmakers.
I see it like this: if I were in a home run derby and I only could get 5 pitches to see how many homers I could hit but all of my opponents got 9-12 pitches to see how many they could hit, then that is a notable disadvantage. We traded so many picks over the last six years and we have put pressure on ourselves to hit 5 homers off 5 pitches.
Olave is a great example. For what we traded for him, he would have needed to be J. Jefferson, Chase, Metcalf, Or Lamb level to be worth it. He’s not and now he may not even play ever again.

Loomis is the ultimate in hierarchy.
Knowing Payton and later Ireland, he probably leaned on both a lot.
