The other day I saw a thread with many poster recommending the 6.5 Grendel as a good low recoil deer rifle.

What ammo are you using?

I built a 6.5 Grendel for my 7-year-old in the AR platform two years ago. He has since killed 4 deer with it, and none of them have run off. Shot one doe at roughly 150 yards. He shoots the Nosler Trophy Grade 6.5 Grendel 129-grain AccuBond-Long Range Rifle Ammo. I purchased it from PSA as it was the heaviest grain I could find for that round.

Looking at buying one of those in the near future. Any issues getting ammo?

129 grain accubond long range. I’ve only shot 1 deer with it. ~50 yards, behind the shoulder, pass through, enough blood to follow and deer went no more than 40 yards.

While I think it’s ideal for a kid, there’s better options for adults. I chose the accubond long range because it’s designed for reliable expansion at lower velocity, (1300 fps IIRC) and I didn’t want something that was going to fragment at short range.

It ain’t cheap but it’s good ammo. Rogers has free shipping over $100

This is what I’m looking for. I can be very thick where I hunt so pass throughs and blood trails are very helpful

Last year I shot two deer using Barnes Vortex Tac TX BT. I didn’t necessarily have a bad experience, but I know that solid copper bullet needs a lot of speed to expand which doesn’t exactly match the Grendel’s ballistics.

I shoot 120gr Nosler BT out of both mine. I order from precision firearms online. They usually go on sale once or twice a year. Sign up for their email.

I reload my own but I use Nosler 120 gr BT. It's what my gun likes the best.

Easily MOA and the bullets are moving slow enough (2450 FPS in an 18" barrel) that they don't grenade and give a good pass through.

I've killed 10+ deer with the SST 6.5G. Most of them DRT. Was very hard to find during covid times.

This is the best Grendel ammo. Always get a pass thru. Hogs/deer doesn’t matter

My first choice for you would be the 120 Nosler Ballistic Tip. I know a lot of folks will read that and say, "The BT is too fragile. It'll blow up." That might be true at high velocity, but at the modest velocities of the Grendel, the NBT is the best bullet to use. Although I've not killed deer w/ the 6.5 G, I've killed >25 deer w/ the 120 gr NBT in a 6.5 JDJ handgun that duplicates the Grendel's velocity and it performed well on all deer. At a muzzle velocity of ~2450 fps, it's your best choice. It's the preferred 6.5mm hunting bullet of many other handgun hunters, as well. From my personal experience (or that of other handgun hunters), other bullets I'd feel good about in the Grendel's MV window are : Sierra 120 gr Pro Hunter, Speer 120 gr Gold Dot and Nosler Partition 125 gr. My group of "first runner ups" would include: 123 gr SST, 110/120 gr TTSX (the 120 gr works well in my 260 Rem handgun, but it has a 200 fps more MV) and 100 gr Nosler Partition (I've not seen it in stock in 3 deer seasons). I've only killed one deer w/ the 123 gr SST and that was in a 260 Rem. OTOH, a friend of mine loves the SST in his 6.5 G AR, having killed >20 hogs w/ it.

Have been using the Hornady 123gr SST for a few years now. Does the job well, but doesn't always exit. Deer have never gone far, but I'd still rather have a blood trail. Have already purchased some Nosler 120gr that I'll switch to, but only after I run out of the Hornady. Little bootlegger (6 yrs old) just killed his first deer Sunday with my Sulzer AR in 6.5 Grendel. Great round.

I use Sierra Pro Hunter 120gr spitzer. It’s a regular cup and core bullet. Cheap too. I’ve killed various size hogs and deer and never had to track more than about 50ft. Muzzle velocity around 2350 fps out of a 16” barrel.

Hornady 123 gr SST
PPU 120 gr HPBT
Been hunting with the 6.5 Grendel since Bill Alexander introduced it in 2003.
I’ve taken game up to cow elk size. It’s devastating on hog and bear.

Man it’s interesting to see people having success with so many different bullets. My take away is that the “lack of hunting bullets” for the 6.5 Grendel is vastly overstated

It’s been more of a “lack of in stock hunting bullets” issue in recent years. But it is getting better.

I probably would have went with something other than the ABLR if I could find it, but the only thing available was SST when I got the rifle, and I didn’t like the reports of no exits. It’s definitely deadly, but where I hunt, a 20 yard dash off the powerline with no blood might not be found.

It goes a little slower than the 6.5 Creedmoor. So it has a little more time to do damage.
