People in college sports have held up Scott Woodward as some sort of coach hiring diety but Jimbo Fisher at A&M and Brian Kelly at LSU have been like firing bullets straight into your shoes

10 year coaching contracts are absolutely insane. If it doesn’t work out you are screwed. Should have offered BK 5-6 year deal. If he turned you down so what move on to the next candidate.

Firing Wade was Woodward’s biggest disappointment to date. He did a really good job with Jay Johnson. I not even mad about the Brian Kelly hire. What I’m mad about is the 10 year $100 million dollar contract with Brain Kelly. It really ties our hands.

Woodward has a chance to have handed out the two worst coaching contracts in sports history back to back. Quite a feat

Brian Kelly isn't the issue. Les Miles isn't half the coach Kelly is but won big at LSU for 1 huge reason: SUCCESSFUL RECRUITING!!!!!
Miles routinely fielded top 5-7 recruting classes. For several years LSU was the only real team to go toe to toe with Saban's best Bama teams. '08, '09, '11, '12 etc.
Recruting needs an overhaul. Whit Weeks would be a backup on any LSU defense between 2003 and 2019. How many legit nfl DBs are on the roster right now.
Kelly needs to overhaul recruiting. Bring back Ed Orgeron if you have to.

Why? It’s the norm now. Name me a TOP 10 coach without a long term big contract.

Absolutely . You have to have a modicum of business sense . Have an idea of fair market value for a coach based on experience and record . Kelley was one year away from retiring when lured to LSU by the 100 million dollar guaranteed contract . CBK is 63 , too old to re-energize a program and the game has passed him by . We would have been better off with Napier and excellent co-ordinators . Woodwards dream candidate , Lincoln Riley , isn’t doing that well either . Coaching football at an ELITE level is a 24/7 365 day a year job . It is hard on relationships and stressful . You need a younger guy IMHO who players relate to and will play for . Did we see that last night ?

We're way too afraid to hire a young up and comer. Irving Meyers was once the coach of Bowling Green. Saban was Toledo. Bowden? Samford.
Sure, it might not work, but at least the buyout is less.

Bana’s coach does not have a ten year contract . I think it is a 7 year contract . Oregon’s coach does not have a 10 year contract . What would be wrong with 5 to 7 yr contract that is more performance based ?

I said the same thing. I would have even tried to offer $12 million a year for 6 years instead of $10 million for 10 years to be able to pivot if need be.

8 years with basically the same guarantee for DeBoar. Lanning gets automatic 1 year extension with 10 win season. They would give Kelly 2 automatic extensions so far.

I didn’t want BK but I completely agree. Hire was objectively good, contract was fricking ridiculous.

No talent on this team

Absolutely agree with you . AND … give your head coach candidate a reasonable amount of time to sign a contract so you don’t get played by agent and prospective coach .
Posted on 11/10/24 at 3:02 pm to Cleary Rebels
Well … that is stupid . And , this economy will not sustain it .

Can you imagine Kelly in the days of Saban’s peak, Urban and those coaches? He’d had his arse kicked constantly. And I’m not a Miles guy, far from it.
