some other states have really good rest areas. Feels like there’s one every hour or two in a lot of the Midwest and they’re usually pretty clean and updated

That Acadian Village at the Ville Platte exit on I49 is one of the most pleasant dumps you can take. It’s very quiet and clean. Serene.

They should’ve never existed.
And if they have to exist, they should be contracted out into a truck stop.
There’s no reason to have an unmanned parking lot in the middle of nowhere with just a bathroom and a vending machine

No, they are not obsolete. People still need to piss somewhere when traveling.

We drive from NC to Bama a few times a year to see family. We always use the rest stops. We usually bring food and snacks for the trip, so all we need is a bathroom.
Rest stops are always quick and easy to get off the interstate and back on at.

They scratch the itch - quick bathroom break between gas/food stops on long trips.
Stretch the legs, walk the dog, get back on the road.

Our state auditor issued one of these cutting wasteful spending reports. Said the state could save $4.5 million but getting rid of rest areas.

No.
We almost always stop at a rest area at some point on a longer trip. Especially if we just want to get out, stretch our legs, and not deal with crazy traffic.

I am guessing the OP’s handle, prplhze2000, is a model of piss bottle used by truckers. OP trying to kill the competition.

Where would the gays find love if they are shut down?

Of all of the things I'd consider wasteful in state government, that's probably low on the list.

In Mississippi, there is a security guard on duty at most or all of them. They all have that cute little white shack.
