Brian Kelly is a high floor, low ceiling coach. He won’t win the games he’s an underdog in, but he won’t lose against lesser competition either.

The only difference between ND and LSU is recruiting. If he can recruit top 5 consistently at LSU then maybe he can succeed.

Kelly was 4-11 vs top 10 in 12 seasons at Notre Dame.

Brian Kelly is currently 2-4 at lsu vs top 10 teams.

Until someone can win a natty at Notre Dame in the modern day college football landscape, I won’t put much stock into this

Short of Nick Saban, I don’t know if there’s a coach out there who could win national championships with Notre Dame’s academic restrictions.

You are so right. His coaching caused us to turn the ball over on 4 out of 5 drives and miss tackles that lead to 5 scoring drives for them in a row. If you want to blame him for not trying to score before half, I’m in. If you want to blame Sloan for the having zero imagination in the running game or being very predictable, I’m in.

People can stay in denial and keep downvoting, but it’s true. Kelly’s record against AP teams is trash all around.

This weekend I guided a professor from Notre Dame on a fishing trip. He had to be back at the dock early today to catch a flight. I asked him if he could pick up Brian Kelly and bring him back to South Bend.

Unless it’s the first game of the season or if the opponent is named Texas A&M, right? 3 times in a row he’s lost to lesser teams in the first game of the season. Lost to an absolutely terrible Aggy team in ‘22 that didn’t even make a bowl game

Sloan is Lynn Amedee and Nussmeier is Jamie Howard all over again.

BK is looking like a slicker and more polished Dumbo Miles.

Yeah, so ND fans talk so much shite about CBK, but why are they so bitter about him leaving then? Lol, I mean shouldn't they be happy such a "terrible" coach left for more money?

No it’s not

ND is recruiting just fine

This is why he was hired. It’s better to go with a sure thing to not destroy the program than to go big on a guy like Napier, or DeBoer who has limited experience. Kelly is seasoned and knows how to coach. He’ll keep LSU from ever being a dumpster fire but may not win it all.

i agree for the most part..

he is the type of coach that can come in and immediately raise the floor of a team, as evidenced by the turnaround he had in year 1 here as well as his stops at previous universities.

i don't think we will ever win a natty with him as coach, but i also think we will never finish worse than 9-3 in a regular season.

it is what it is atp

Woodward knew this. He made the smartest hire he could’ve possibly made. This is why:

Very few coaches ever win national championships, and having a high ceiling doesn’t guarantee one—only one team wins each year. The odds are slim no matter who’s coaching, and even Kirby didn’t win last year, likely won’t this year.

If you're committing to a coach long-term, why not prioritize a high floor? A “low ceiling” is just speculation, and even with a high ceiling, the chance of winning it all remains incredibly small.

Who’s to say a low floor, high ceiling, higher risk coach is more likely to win a natty? Is 1/50 odds better than 1/75? In both instances you probably aren’t winning a championship.
