Can 150 mg per day of Rimadyl cause liver and kidney failure in a 65 pound dog ? Administered over two and a half days prior to organ failure. TIA

I’ll defer to the vets, but I think we were having to give our dog 4mg/lb for 5 days and she was fine. They made us give her a Pepcid pill with it.
Edit: Just looked at the old vet notes and I apparently did my math was wrong. It was only 2mg/lb she was on for 5 days. And it was split into 2 doses a day (25mg twice a day for a total of 50mg - 25lb dog).

The products website puts dosing cutoff between 100 and 150 mg per day at 60 lbs
I’d have to think there would be some other contributing factor but I’m also not a vet

Was bloodwork done prior to the meds being given?how old was the dog?
That seems like a pretty high dose. What were the circumstances?

2 mg per kg of body weight per day.

That is concerning. I do not believe bloodwork was done before the dog was started on the medication.
The dog was receiving daily radiation to treat a tumor on a front leg. He’d completed 15 of 19 treatments. No complications. The nsaid was prescribed for radiation irritation/burn.
There was bloodwork at the start of the radiation therapy…all normal.

From my experience they probably wouldn’t repeat bloodwork if they did it very recently before radiation.

Rimadyl is bad as I understand. My dogs have been prescribed it post-surgery along with gabapentin and I don’t like it. Most probably do ok and mine did. She got 75 mg 2x per day as is 58 lbs. So 150 mg per day. You can research it.

Eh. Just a tasteless joke that made me chuckle and I expected to be DV’d into oblivion. They can’t all be winners. I edited though, for OP.

Dosing chart
Again, won’t pretend to be a vet or anything but sharing the guide I mentioned

That’s the chart I’ve read. It looks to top out at 100mg if I’m interpreting it correctly.

Mine started the drug on a Friday evening. Quit eating and the drug was discontinued by Monday. (5 75mg doses given) . He went to ICU Tuesday. I euthanized him Friday morning.

It’s pill size next to pill quantity. So at 65 it’s 1.5 pills that are 100 mg, so 150 mg.
Half a 25 - 12.5
Whole 25 - 25
Half a 75 - 37.5
Half 100- 50
And so on

I once gave a very, very, very small dog an entire adult Benadryl. In my defense, regular old Bendaryl pills are f'n tiny. Dog stayed alive, slightly comatose, slept for around 36 hours straight and shook it off like a champ.

Dad routinely gave our ACD Tylenol every time she tangled with a cottonmouth or a rattlesnake. Always worked for her.
But she wasn’t a normal dog…ate crawfish heads, drank beer and loved raw oysters.
